I was moving my bike around the garage yesterday and accidentally dropped it and bent the shift lever. It was bent enough that it was hitting the shift linkage rod. I removed the shift lever and hammered on it with a rubber mallet while resting it on a piece of wood. Took about 100 good whacks to get it straightened and it didn't break so it should be good to go right? I guess if it is weakened it would probably break if dropped again on that side. Don't really want to spend $80 for a new one.
I re-installed it and the bike shifts through all the gears normally.
No other damage to the bike, I set it down as gently as I could. I thought the side stand was all the way down but it wasn't and by the time I realized that it was past the point where I could stop it from going over. Thankfully, I have frame sliders. The only points that touched the ground were the shift lever, my bar end mirror (which folds) and the clutch lever. I had to tighten the bar end mirror but the clutch lever is fine (one tiny little scuff where the anodize rubbed away).
It isn't perfect but should work fine.

Are these made out of steel? It looks like it is cast but cast of what? It doesn't seem to rust at all because I've scrapped the lower edge while leaned over cornering and it hasn't rusted... then again, I live in the desert. Still, the bike has been ridden in the rain a few times over the years.
The one on mine is cast aluminum. I suspect yours is also.
They can break from straightening but if you go slowly, like you did, they'll straighten to be good enough to use.

And a big thanks to SpeedyMoto frame sliders. I've had my Duc for 3+ years now and put over 15,000 miles on it. The frame sliders was the first thing I bought for this bike and yesterday was the first time I've "used" them. ;D
You got lucky, When I tipped mine in the garage (thankfully onto a rubber mat) it busted the clipon. Literally ripped it off the bike stripping the threads inside in the process. It was fixable but it gave me an excuse to buy some Rizoma Rearsets. ;)

As long as they're not pretzeled, they almost always can be bent back.
