Is it possible to clean it? if not, I was going to go k&n or bmc. Also, if I go with an aftermarket filter is it ok to run after market slip ons and air filter with no edu reflash or power commander. I realize optimally I should run one, but financially it would be a couple months before I could spring for a remap or power commander.

replacing as per manual is at 15K miles or 24K kms . . .
if you go the "performance" filter route, remember more air will be coming in and the stock ECU can compensate just "so much" . . . I've seen cases, locally where either the air filter or the cans were replaced and the engine runs lean, you DON'T want that in a Ducati engine . . . Best way to go, Termi kit with air filter, cans and ECU or send your ECU to have it re-flashed . . .
Owners manual and service sheet say "check and clean air filter" at 7500 miles and 22500 miles. I'm just wondering what the procedure is for cleaning it, I assume its different than the normal K&N cleaning. And yes running lean isn't something I want to do

take it out and blow some air from the inside . ..
a Termi kit with US specs should be running around $1800 . . . slips ons and reflash could be around $1000
I'm currently running slip ons, so I would just be looking for an air filter // fuel remap. I was considering bmc // power commander V or bazzaz, thoughts? Also on the original topic is that the generally accepted way to clean the stock filter? sounds right but I haven't found anything anywhere about how to clean it.
That's how I do it . . . I would go for a re-flash w/a DP map to start . . . if you have a tuner close or can travel to one, then go and have it re-programmed on a dyno . . .
Personally, I do not like piggy backs, I repeat, personally . . .

Yes, like Carlos suggested, blow it out from the inside with compressed air. Just be careful to hold the nozzle back from the filter element so that you don't damage the filter with too much of an air blast. Just enough air pressure to blow most of the dirt back out of the filter.
Popped the filter out last night, turned the psi down on my compressor and blew air from the inside out. Filter didn't look dirty at all and not much dirt came out, so I'm assuming it was either still clean? or I completely missed something here
you are assuming right . .. if instead of being "orange" looks brown, then replace . . just remember, if you go hi perf filter, you WILL NEED the reflash . . .
I have had good results with Rexxer, all diagnostic tools can still read the ECU and perform adjustments as needed plus if you get the Rexxer interface, you can do diagnostics by yourself and go back to OEM or purchase a new map if you decide to eliminate the O2 sensors . . . just my 0.02
I'm about an hour away from motowheels, i'm pretty sure they do work with rexxer, but I'll have to double check.
