I have a 1999 Ducati Monster 900 with carbs. Long story short it has bent intake valves. Looking into getting a whole new/used motor because parts alone run 1600 bucks and I am finding decent used motors for the same price online. Does anyone know if any other sizes like if the 750 will fit in the frame? The 900 motor market is slim right now
You'll be really disappointed with a 750 coming off the 900.
What other parts do you need besides valves and possibly guides?
It needs all valves, guides, pistons, all the gaskets and o-rings when tearing into top end. There is a crack in the right rear portion of cases that is just at where the bolt mounts to the frame. Its braced really well but I am looking into a complete motor and be done with it and fix this one over time. If anyone has a good motor I am interested.

There are 3 900 motors on ebay right now for less than $1600.

I'd look into that one if it was me.
When searching on Fleabay try just 'Ducati 900 engine' as the 900SS of the same era had the same motor. Also look for an engine with a 'V' on the heads, it indicates the larger valves. After 97 the M900 had heads with the smaller M750 vavles and new camshalfs, they gave improved torque at the lower end of the RPM and were marked with a 'W' on the head.
pre '99 motors were 2ph charging correct ? '99 and later were all 3ph AFAIK so would a 750 nichols flywheel work on a 900 ?
The one thing I never figured out was are just the intakes different from carb to FI or are the way they attach to the head different too ?
Pre-'99 were single phase, '99 and later 3-phase.
AFAIK, flywheels are not different between motor sizes.
FI intake manifolds are different from carbie.
600/750 carbie manifolds are different from 900, as ports are in a different position.

Let me correct the above slightly: The 3~ charging system came onto 2V engines in 1998. However, the 900 in that year was the 'W' head so you don't want that motor anyways.
Flywheels do swap so long as charging system remains the same.

Ya, that's what I meant. A pair of 900 carb intake runners will fit on a 900 FI motor. From what I remember reading, because the 900 is a "big block" so to speak by head stud spacing compared to the 600/750 being smaller in spacing. I'd think 750 runners are longer.
Is there anybody that ever compiled a database of what parts off of what engines will interchange? Like will 900 jugs fit on 916 cases ? or 750 jugs go on 748 cases ?
The small motor carbie manifolds come out of the head nearly straight, while the 900's have a bit more of a bend.

Most of the 1998 900's (M900 & (900SS-FE) had a one year only flywheel from what I've been told. I've had 2 flywheels from 94-97 900's for my '98 M900 that didn't fit & I had to sell. The 1998 has a 3 phase charging system that is in between the old 2 phase and the new '00 & up 3 phase type & is unique to that year.

To amend my previous snarky post:
The entirety of Ducati 3~ charging systems run an interchangable flywheel. They may look different or have different part numbers, but they will swap between motors. From M400's (Japan) to 1198SP's.
There is nothing unique about a 1998 3~ charging system besides the wire length out of the stator up to the regulator. Ducati gave the wrong info to the supplier so a small harness to lengthen those wires was used. By 1999 they had that issue sorted.

Pivot diameter is same, S*R pivot shaft has a snout on each end for the footpeg assemblies to hang on.
