Title: 05' s2r 800 same as 07?
Post by: woppini on July 13, 2008, 12:03:44 PM
Looking at getting a used 05 s2r 800 with only a few thousand miles. Does the 05 bike/engine have any issues or tsb/recalls that the newer ones dont? Iam assuming through those few years of the s2r, the bikes pretty much stayed the same except for color optioins

The S2R800 is a good bike and I really haven't seen any problems reported.  If you really want to get anal about it the main "problem" has been bad valve guides.  If you are getting a used bike ask for maintenance records to see if the bike was taken to a dealership for at least one valve clearance tune up while it was under warranty.  If so then you should be clear because they would have noticed a bad valve during the tune up.

I bought 05 S2r last fall with 3k miles.  Now have 5500 on it.  Not a lot, I know.  Do the 05 vs 07 purchase price math, price a few options you want and I figure the 05 looks nice.

Im not positive but i think the only difference is that they are virtually the same bike but different color options available and longer service intervals (though they are the same bike) and possible that the 07 has the lambda/o2 sensor which i would assume would make the ecu different between the two bikes.  I think that is all

Are you SURE the 07 has an 02 sensor?

I was not aware of this. I have an 05 S2R 800. Great bike, ultra reliable. I bought it May 2007 with 1250 miles. Currently have 13650 miles on it. Runs like a champ so far. I had an M800 before that. 800 motor is in my opinion that best 2V motor they've ever made.. Better than the M1000DS

If i remember correctly, i remember reading on the old DML that the 07 and up were under the #3 standard or something like that.  I dont remember what comes before the number but the 05-06 s2r800 were under the #2 emissions standard while the 06-current s2r1000 were all under the #3 standard.  That was the reason for the o2-sensor.

I have also read that not all 2007 s2r800 have an o2 sensor.  Something about the euro version having to have while some dont.

I cant verify but that is what i have read on the boards.

2007 and up bikes have to be EURO 3 compliant.  Hence the o2 sensor.

THATS IT, its "Euro" and then a number.  The 05-06 s2r800 were euro 2, the 07 was euro 3.  The s2r1000 from 06 and up were also (i think) euro 3.

Hope the info was helpful.  To summarize, I think the only REAL difference between the 05 and 07 is that on is Euro 2 and 07 is Euro 3 (hence the lambda probe/o2 sensor).

Now the only issue in choosing between the bikes is that one will need some tlc while the other still has some warranty left.  What I mean by TLC is that depending on the mileage, you may have to replace the fluids and filters and Im sure you would have to change the belts as well since they are over 2 years old.
