Title: suspension modification
Post by: truckinduc on July 13, 2008, 02:28:41 PM
In this thread I will cover the modifications im currently preforming to my bike. Its a 1995 M900. I recently had a bad wreck where i hit a cat while in a corner. I broke my left femur and had to have re-constructive knee surgery. I thought what a better time to change my bike, i cant ride it anyway. keep in mind in 19 years old.

Things to do

-brace stock swingarm
-design and fabricate rear suspension
-fabricate aluminum subframe

Bike before the crash.

ok lets get started.

First thing is to get the bike where you can comfortably work on it.

Then take apart everything that needs to come off

what the brace will look like

next step, cutting up the stock swingarm, Bye Bye uglyness

I will have plenty of room to run my custom exhaust through here

thanks guys. As for the handeling that will be determined by my rear suspension set up. IM bracing the frame where i cut it so it should not loose any strength. Its rearward of the 2 motor mounts, think about it. Its similar to how the superbike frames are made up, and the hypermotard. Ive got a long way to go. Stay tuned folks

Well from the looks of your avatar, it seems like you like to ride the bike pretty hard. I hope the new swingarm/suspension setup will take the abuse.

It takes a lot more stones and vision to actually fab up custom work, weld and chop things, and make a bike your own than to customize a bike with some farkles, carbon fiber, and shiney bolt-ons from catalogs, so if anyone has anything negative to say ... F'em  [wine]

Im trying to find some high temp engine paint in or near the gun metal gray color? any suggestions.

While your waition on pics, im waiting on a shock. Once it gets here i can build my suspension linkage, and progress on my frame.

No more doctor visits for me. Im already 3k in debt cause of this knee and i cant afford any more visits. Keep in mind im 19 years old.

Ya i was on the old board and realized there were alot of good guys on there. I was sad when it got bought.

I though i would be pissing off some extreme ducati guys by sutting my frame in half, guess they havent found this thread yet.

I think its cool people buy parts and spend TONS of money on their bikes, its just not me. I have to physically change the bike big time. I want something that NO ONE has.

part of owning a monster is making it your own no matter what anybody else says, purist or not. putists wash their bikes everytime they ride it. hell with that. I bought my bike to ride. I tore it down and powdercoated all kinds of shit so there's less time washing(cleans really easy) and more time riding and it looks kickass to boot. if you gotta piss 5 people off to make yourself happy and impress 20 people than I say hack the hell out of it and make it YOUR monster, I did (only I didn't cut as much off).

Title: Re: suspension modification
Post by: knightrider on July 15, 2008, 09:07:48 PM
it looks to me like you are making a SS. dont ss swingarms already have a brace and shock setup similar to what your planning? i dont think they have a linkage setup though, just a shock from the swingarm to the frame. maybe that would be easier so you dont have to mess with linkage ratios and whatnot.

Title: Re: suspension modification
Post by: truckinduc on July 16, 2008, 10:07:37 AM
ya i was planning on going SS style with a stock ss swinger. I couldnt find a swinger for a reasonable price and i want linkage. I couldnt really do much tuning without linkage. With linkage i can adjust ride height, and switch out rockers to adjust leverage ratios, and adjust my wheel travel.

but if you change the rocker ratio, you would need to change the spring rate.

Title: Re: suspension modification

yes, which i can change with a different spring. I think ive got it figured out where i can use the stock spring just fine.

thanks everyone. I love comments. Ive had no time to work on the bike lately. I go in to work at 10 and get home at 8. I am bringing my triples to sandblast at work tomorrow.

The 954 shock in in the mail headed my way, TN, from NC. Should be here in a day or so.

Got my speedometer in today. Its tiny, like an inch by an inch and a half. Gonna mount on my top triple with a custom mount ill fab up.

IM having trouble with my linkage design so far. My shock only has 57mm of travel and i need more. 6 inches of wheel travel would be awesome, but im going to have to settle for 5.5 or even 5.3. Im not too happy about that.

My dad is going to have me build his 160cc Duc into a dirtbike. Another project for me!!!! As if my hands were not full already. Oh well, it will be neat, and ill get some money from it to fund my stuff.

I have sunday and monday off so ill get alot of work done then.  STAY TUNED

I don't want to harsh your groove or anything, but as a 55 year old going under the knife on Tues after a lifetime of abuse, one bit of advice I can give a 19 year old is take care of your body.  Riding a motorcycle without a fully functioning left foot (hence the surgery) is a PITA.  I can't imagine riding one without a left knee would be any easier.

Good Luck with the mods, and the knee.

It might be a good idea to remove the paint from the inside of the triples where they secure the forks.

When I painted my lower triple last year I actually masked it off.

 Just thought.

Is the reasoning behind this because the paint will make the forks thicker therefore may or maynot be able to fit the triples?

Yes... eventually paint will come loose and so does bolts too, thats why I filed my engine/frame surface from paint too.

shock hangs down less than 1/4 inch more than stock exhaust.

these are the moving parts of the suspension. The swingarm on the left, with tabs welded on. The rocker plates and mount welded to the engine case. The lower rod. And the arm in the front. The arm is actually pretty complex in 2 dimensions. The shock will be on the other side of the lower rod. And the rear of the shock will be mounted to the engine case with more weld on tabs.

Theres been situatioins in the S2R (which have no fenders) where rocks and bits have come up and damaged the shock. So a belly pan would be very importnat investment here.

I know that gsxr fork seals will fit right on a 2005 s2r and they cost $11.00 each.
Maybe that seal will fit your bike and you can save some moolah.
What this board needs is a what fits what thread.
