Title: What type of grease on fuel line quick disconnect fittings
Post by: EEL on January 02, 2015, 08:03:23 AM
Using the search I found multiple threads on the quick disconnects that tie into the tank. I've had to drain my tank so the disconnects are currently unplugged. I've heard that the viton o-rings have a tendency to tear of the fittings arent greased.

Rather than muck up my fuel system with some random lubricant, what type of grease is required/recommended for this o-ring?

As long as you use it sparingly it doesn't really matter.

My tech uses chain lube at the track as it's readily available, won't clump up due to over zealous application, and won't damage o-rings.

I use wd-40.

Visually inspect the top o-ring prior to reconnecting, they're quite prone to damage.
I've not seen a damaged lower o-ring.

I installed dry break disconnects on my bike and love them! No need to drain tank when removing it!

Yes, well you cant install dry break disconnects without draining the tank once right? i totally agree with you. My quick disconnects are ordered but I'm in the process of gettings the valves done. Decided to drain the tank in the interim using the existing disconnects in the interim. Figured I'd need this info eventually.

You can get some fuel line clamps and stop enough of the flow to cut the lines and install the quick disconnects with everything in place. If you haven't bought them yet, these are the best made and will never need the orings replaced:

Vaseline will work and any excess will dissolve safely in the fuel. Actually, any fuel contamination will be miniscule and probably inconsequential. But, IMO, any silicone based lube should be avoided.

I was thinking a mild application of petroleum jelly. But I'll start with WD-40 and work my way up the ladder if needed.

Thank you for your suggestion.
