Title: Wires
Post by: kopfjäger on January 04, 2015, 09:44:49 AM
Cleaned up some wiring. You can see all the wires coming up from the rear, speedo, rear brake light, neutral. There is also the original tab for the reservoir behind the wires. All the wires are mil spec now and routed through the frame gusset in one sheath. The top of the wire you see in this pic is hidden by the tank when it is down.

I'll be impressed when you convert the frame to a RF bus and have no wiring at all.  :-)

It keeps getting better.  Who's doing the work?  Have you thought about using the new Motogadget switchgear?

Because the buttons are too small?  That's what I'm worried about - they look hard to use while wearing gloves.  Where did you mount the M-unit and other electrics like the rectifier, battery, etc.?  Did you use stock locations, or move them someplace else?

I think (opinion) they would work on a chopper, but not on this bike.

I would build one from scratch using all Mil-spec wiring and small JST connectors. Take your time as this shit is tedious work at best. Sit back and study what you'd like it to become before jumping in the deep end.  ;)

Cool - thanks!  [thumbsup] JST as in the brand?  Why do you prefer JST specifically?  I'm not familiar with connector quality, construction etc - are they high-end?

It's your call, there are several you could use.

Ditto the JST recommendation.

Several crimpers available on the market for them. I've found the PA-09 capable of very reliable crimps for that size, and to be probably the most reasonably priced quality crimper for them on the market. Several ebay vendors carry them. Beware of inferior crimpers!

"mil spec" is pretty broad, and can get pricey without needing to.  i use a mil spec for the wires on the pickups on my pantahs, but that is because it is submerged in oil -- teflon, heat resistant, oil resistant, etc etc.

For external wires, look to the SAE wire standards TXL, SXL and GXL.  They are automotive quality heat and solvent proof (not for submersion though)..  and much cheaper than the "mil spec" label.  You can't get them at Auto Zone, but you can find them online and in colors and with stripes if you want.

The two  little black cylinders below the ignition switch mounts are diodes for the Motogadget turn signal light. The yellow wires poking out at an angle below that are the headlight , wired directly to the harness.

it means you missed the point.

"mil spec" is mostly useless  because it encompasses a bunch of different wiring standards.  Some may be appropriate for an exposed application, MOST are not. and vendors are happy to tout the 'mil spec' label because people will buy it without realizing they will be rewiring things in a year because it has melted or disintegrated.

TXL/SXL/GXL/SGX xlpe wire is designed for exposed use next to an engine -- inside car engine compartments.  The type designation refers to the standard and thickness of the insulator.  All of them are designed for high heat, acid, fuel and oil exposure.

TXL is the thinnest and SGX is the thickest (for batteries primaries).  Most OEMs use TXL.  SXL is thicker and is what I've used for loom projects on bikes -- I've rewired half a dozen Pantahs with it and used TE connectors for everything.

There are at least 2000 different "mil spec" wiring specifications and some of them are not appropriate for high-heat application or exposure to fuel or oil.  Some are for electronic applications, that was my point.  Buying "mil spec" wire may be a waste because it isn't the right "mil spec" for an exposed near-engine application.

Once routed, what's keeping that run there?  I see it's passing under the throttle cable (I think) - is there some sort of clip?

"I don't have anything on it now, it is actually is pretty stable the way I made it. Once the main harness is done and attached I'll see how it feels, I will prob put a really small zip tie near the corner it turns. It won't be visible on the outside of the frame."

Right side ready to get wrapped, once we decide on what will be used.

those braided sleeves are pretty sweet, if you are willing to pull the harness it isnt too bad of an install since they expand more than double their intended size.

Brake sensor wires go into the SF switch, then travel inside the SF sleeve to the main harness.

It's a bit ornery to apply, but once it's on, and small zip-ties applied every 4" or so, and on each side of branches in the harness, it's good.
