Title: Rear view camera to replace or use in addition to mirrors
Post by: WestonWith2 on July 13, 2008, 05:43:43 PM
I've been reading the threads on mirrors and searching the net for different options. Nothing yet seems to call out to me as an alternative to the mickey mouse ears I've got now on the bike.

So I was wondering how realistic a camera would be instead of mirrors. I've been searching for different options on a camera and this - http://www.rearviewcamera.net/crv/crviis.dll?mtd=products&part=ANT-RVD035-75SB seems to be the best one so far. $500 though. That's a lot of money if it doesn't work well and I have to scrap it.

Anyone have any thoughts or experience on this?

Thanks,
Weston

Thoughts: Pointless

a) because its not like its hard to see behind you anyway just turn your head.
b) in most states you need atleast 1 mirror, so you still have to have a mirror
c) $500 thats not being spent on mods that makes your bike more blinged out? are you crazy? I a few hundred more and i could get one hell of a rear shock....

CRG Bar end mirrors.  Easy, quick install.  Board tested and approved. Lots of $$$ left over for other mods.

i think walmart had a rear view camera for 100 bucks. Even had a 3 inch backlit lcd screen. I say go for it if you want to be different.

I saw one at Costco recently for something like $60-70...  It was wireless between the camera and screen...  Got decent reviews I think...

1. If I was you, I'd check to make sure cameras are legal. Government departments LOVE making things 50 times harder than they have to be - you might find screen size has been legislated, field of view, half a dozen other things you'd never even dream of.

2. Mirrors are pretty failproof, so it's hard to fault them. I'd seriously consider getting bar end mirrors. I just installed a set, and my visibility is unbelievably good - much better than I expected. Also, because the mirrors are concave, I could actually get away with only using ONE mirror - the field of view is excellent.  [thumbsup]
