Title: 2002 Monster won't start
Post by: ccopeland on February 08, 2015, 12:30:06 PM
2002 Ducati Monster 750...wont start....electrics come on and do self test, it won't complete the sequence. The relays next to the battery click and the low level light flickers....have taken all apart, cleaning tank and putting it back together...any ideas why it won't start? Battery good, starter solenoid good...can't figure it out.

Most likely a discharged or bad battery, could also be high resistance in the wiring/connections to the starter or a bad ground.  Start by fully charging the battery and having it load tested.  Alternative:  Jump start from a known good battery.  You can use your car as long as it is not running.  Let us know what happens and we can help you with further diagnostics.

Thank you, brand new battery and starter solenoid. Both test when I jump the circuit. Starter motors and fuel pump spins off the battery when direct...just wont do it when I hit the starter button. May be a bad ground somewhere, just not sure where...wires test good for power, just not starting for some reason.

Check the small connector on the solenoid. Remove and re-install even if it looks like it's plugged in.

Thank you, the solenoid is hooked up properly...no change

So it cranks, but won't start?

It rolls through the self test but nothing happens when I push the start button.

Then it's the switch,, the wires to that connector, the connector connection, or the solenoid.

Do you have a voltmeter, and are you familiar with how to use it?

Yes, I have a voltmeter, I've been chasing the wires from the diagram...being challenged to find the short or bad ground.

When you push the starter button do you have battery voltage between the wires at the small solenoid connector?

Just an FYI...the older Monsters frequently had wiring issues where the harness runs by the steering head. It most often affects the kill switch wiring, which depending on how that model's kill switch operates, could cause your issue. You have to cut it open to find the issue.

While we're at it, your kill switch is in the run position...right? ;D

Cranks when everything is bypassed, so we can assume battery is good.  Did you try bypassing the solenoid?  New does not mean good.  If that is not the problem I would look at what is happening at terminals 85 and 86 at the relays.  The relays clicking is a symptom of a lack of power to the relay coils or lack of ground from the relays.  I'm mystified that both relays click since they do not share a ground.  They do not share a trigger either.  You might want to start with checking for proper voltage at terminal 85 for the main relay.  Also, check all fuses.

In case you don't know, the way your bike works is you turn the key and when you hit the starter button a signal is sent to the computer.  If the safety requirements (sidestand position, in neutral, etc.) are met and the immobilizer says OK the bike cranks.
