Title: HM796 rear cog swap w/ M796
Post by: wankski on February 10, 2015, 03:09:43 AM
Hi Guys,

I figured they would be compatible parts, but does anyone know if the rear 42T stock sprocket of a HM796 can be swapped onto a Monster 796 rear?

reason being the monster 796 seems to have too tall gearing with a 15/39 set up stock - whereas the hypermotard has 15/42 - it appears to be a simple swap.

anyone done this?

second part to the question is, will the stock 108 link chain work fine on a 15/42 set up?

now - please i request that you attend to the question being asked if you actually know the answer to the question being asked. I'm not seeking responses such as 'just swap the front sprocket to a 14T, it's cheaper/easier'...

Cheers,

Joe

I dont exactly know.

But... I'm sure a 42T rear sprocket is available for your Monster.

My M1100 was too tall geared for my liking (15/39 stock).  I ended up with 15/43 gearing.... and yes, I needed a new, longer chain.

Money well spent IMO.

Not a direct answer to your question, but I hope it helps a little nonetheless.

Not that simple go to http://www.gearingcommander.com/ (http://www.gearingcommander.com/) and see how it will affect your ride height and wheelbase it will also tell you the what chain you could use. I have an M1100 and I have found that I had to use a longer chain in order to bring my wheelbase close to factory along with my ride height.

thanks - that does help - that's a great online calc!

i made a mistake the HM rear is 41 not 42, and i'd def want the 42 anyway... hmmm...

prolly need a 110 link in that case...

back-burner job then.

i think you'll find the oem hm796 rear sprocket is twice the price of a supersprox stealth or the like.  of that order anyway.  so an aftermarket in whatever you want will be to go.  check out sprocketcenter.com
