Rode it over the local hills with some blokes. Was thinking how well it runs and that I will never sell it.

Is this a mod thread...

or a riding thread?

I honestly dunno. Maybe a general question?

My question was a bit tongue in cheek. ;)

We'll see what it becomes.

It's a General thread  ;D

About what - in general - you did to your Monster today.  Generally.

To recap:

I removed a crappy plastic Vic Roads label holder no longer required by law.

koko64 and some blokes rode his Monster over some hills.

GK will be along soon, I know he did something to his Monster (although I highly doubt there'll be pics  [laugh]).

I wiped my hand across the seat to see how much dust has collected   ;)

Nothing particularly exciting except ride it (which is exciting).

I changed oil brands from Motul to Yamalube and the small amount of oil usage is gone. Had previous success with the local Penrite oil.

Removed the TWM black folding brake lever to put on my Hyper (sorry Monster), but will fit a CRG lever on instead (as soon as I can find the little push rod thingy for it). Using a Brembo lever in the meantime. Also changed the brake fluid.

Here I am!

Now be nice Ung.

Actually, I didn't do anything Monster related today, i.e Sunday.

Saturday, I was careful stepping over the battery tender cord on the way to the workbench!

Sadly that's about it this weekend, although I did fold some Ducati t-shirts before putting them away!

Great idea for a thread Ung!

I put baffles in my exhaust.  Happy neighbours and less likelihood of upsetting the local Plod.  Not that you can hear the difference, over the clutch rattle!

1) Topped-up the tire pressure.
2) Started it for the first time in a month. Fired right up!  [thumbsup]
3) Rode over the pass and through the valley and back again. Gorgeous!
4) Noted how hard the seat felt after 140 miles.
5) Noticed that a chain lube is now 100 miles passed due.

1st-Installed Ignitech.
2nd-Put on my blingy Desmotimes billet axle plates, proceeded to let bike down off the pitbull stand....stand scrubbed the axle plates. Grrrrrr!
3rd-Rode 3 miles in cold weather, aborted mission, returned to base.

I tried the DB killers in my Leo Vince pipes a while back. Not that much quieter, but able to ride fine without ear plugs.

I prefer them out though!

Amazing geographical differences this year.  The closest we've got to snow is seeing your storms on tv.  We always plan on taking a mid-winter Mexico trip, but somehow never make it and this year there's no need to even plan it, the Mexico weather has come to us.

About what I did to my Monster today, I looked at it and wondered what it would take to turn it into a Scrambler.

...and in central NH this year is nothing special as far as winters are concerned. Southern and coastal areas have really gotten hammered due to storm tracks.

Went into the shed, rolled the Duc out, prayed that it would start without a battery jump start (it did  ;D) and went for a ride, watching out for all the gravel on the road.  It's 45 degrees and zero snow on the ground out here in SE Alaska.

Carbon hugger to keep the crap off the shock. Didn't come with one stock :P. Tight arses. I would have got a plastic one if I could find one. Nearly cut up a drink bottle to chuck on the shock.

Still on the fence about this...I would certainly enjoy the benefits but the only hugger I've ever seen that I didn't wanna vomit on is the carbon "shorty" from Carbonworld and Monsterparts.

I'm still curious what the "lower" mudguard that is only available for that looks like, and if it's very functional.

Wow.  It looks great already.  If you can keep that same visual balance (I want to say "elegance" but that's not quite right) through the rest of the build it'll be a winner.  It's already a winner!

What does that hugger fit?

It fits all the DS alloy swingarms. It's a "lower mudguard"/fender. Seems like most ppl remove em bc you don't see them too often, but from the pics I can find it looks pretty subtle and non offensive to me. If it keeps even a little amount of muck off the shock and engine I'd use it. I find the regular huggers to be absolutely horrific looking. I wish someone would make that carbon shorty for the older Monsters...would rather not cut and drill a new part.

Used the conifigurator to select the paint for the wheels (which are getting thin). Going for light gold, magnesium gold, Tuscan gold, style colour to go with the black frame and red tank. Or um, maybe black [laugh].
The seat cowl and bikini fairing are carbon. I was deciding between matching the tank colour with them or staying carbon.

Gave the bike a pat as I walked past. It really runs so well and smooth for an old 900.
It now has CRG levers (from the forum FS section [thumbsup]) which fit the hand so well.

Exhaust installed on the EVO. Looks good EXCEPT for the galv plated bracket that connects the carbon fiber exhaust clamp to the EVOtech stock exhauxst bracket. BOO!

Looks like I'll need to paint/powdercoat that sometime.

Gotta get the bike running first, then worry about the details!

I'm stepping up from an 800cc monster to the 1100 EVO. I might need them! [laugh].

For the last 10 years I've been able to hamfist my old bike and never worry about the repercussions.

Recognizing that bad habits are hard to break, I bought the EVO for the Traction control "Just in case". I figured I could ween off it once I get used to the motor characteristics.

Then, took #1 daughter for a 40 min spin.

1 km from home, bike stalls. Won't re start!

Off with the seat, up goes the tank. Negative battery terminal is a bit loose.

Call the GLW who promptly arrives with the station wagon and tools.

Terminal tightened, bike jump started and I limp home.

Battery tender hooked up 11.7 volts.

A good charge should do it!

Sheared off one of the bolts holding the central tank plastic on.  It's the central one, closest to the rider (the rightmost one in the photo):
I tried an Eze-out but it just snapped.  Thankfully there are 10 other bolts holding this piece firmly in place so I have just mounted the old bolt head in place for cosmetic effect.  As far as I can tell, to rectify the situation I would need to source a whole new filler cap assembly, which sounds like a pain.

These work great with an impact driver. Just keep the impact driver in reverse the whole time. Reverse drill and then flip the bit over and use the reverse screw looking side to back it out.

It works 90% of the time

Talk about reverse tuning. :P It's for the best though.

The monsters are out of hibernation!  Today, just planning for oil-change, belt-change, rear height adjustment, rear-tyre replacement, clip-on installation, headlight lowering and electrical cleanup (better job strapping and hiding cables).

Oh yeah, the jumpers are on the batteries as one of the batteries was a little light on charge and wouldn't turn over.

And I'm planning on chopping about 4" off the end of each of those termis they stick out way to far.

-Changed the oil ( had to impale the filter to get it off after I managed to strip the edges with the filter wrench)
-Installed new CRG carbon levers (fairly un eventful except the plunger threads were stripped)
-discovered a mouse used the tank insulator as a nest over the winter (I think they are replaceable)
-Put the battery back on the tender for hopefully only one more week  :'(

Took off the clear indicator lenses that didn't quite fit (tab end kept popping out) and reinstalled orange items. Nice and snug now!  [thumbsup]

Spied the 39 tooth sprocket in the spares box, that I'll use to replace the worn 40 tooth tooth sprocket! It'll keep me going for a bit longer.  [Dolph]

Aaaahhh spares!  [beer]

I read an article in a magazine a few years back about the difficulties of building a big bore air-cooled engine.  There is actually a lot of design work to balance power, heat management, piston clearances, emissions etc that goes in.

I replaced the heavy plastic ignition cover with a CF one (be stem, $40).  Surely I shaved off 2g in weight, increasing the power to weight ratio of my S4R!  That's equivalent to about a 10hp gain right?!?

Job 1
Replaced the orrible Barnett friction plates with a set of sintered steel from Gowenlock's $30 each
result is fantastic no judder and hardly any rattle as the tangs fit closer in the basket.
Job 2
Replaced Mrs Dogs 696 wet clutch with a Ducati OEM pack ,bleed and a flush of the clutch lines.
Fresh oil and filter and new liquid gasket .
No more slipping and longer friction zone took it for a test ride..... fantastic.
A little more fiddly than the dry clutch but still an easy DIY

Happy wife happy life  [clap]

Replaced stator with a new one from electrosport... Bike holds volts like it should now. I was kind of skeptical about my test results, not really believing them. Thinking to myself that out of all the bikes I have owned, new and old, none of them had a stator go bad. hmmm

Returned the loaner Monster 1200S I had for a couple days and got my Monster back. As a welcome home bought some NCR, EVR and titanium goodies.

Put nearly 250 miles on a loaner 1200S. Was an interesting experience. The Ohlins goodies are really good, ABS and the three mode riding options are fun to choose between. But at the end of the day I was excited to see my S4R and would choose it over the new 1200S any day. The throttle pull is so light and with the three riding modes you can select how quickly power is delivered but at the end of the day, the engine didnt speak to me. No clacking of the dry clutch, no 'real' feeling of how the engine is working underneath me.

Sure some will love it but I'm going to stay old school... [clap]

Attempted to (finally) register my bike in California. Even though I'm the original owner, title in hand, I now have to take it to the CHP office to have the VIN verified. Stamped on the head tube, matched the title and the AZ registration, but apparently they were looking for another sticker with the VIN on it.

Note: If you clean up the frame by removing stickers, make sure you KEEP that sticker somewhere on the bike...

Yup.  Been there & had to do JUST that.  Fortunately, the CHP officers doing the inspection were bikers too so they didn't give a rats ass.  Took like 10 minutes once I got there.  YMMV.

Hopefully. I have an appointment at 7am next week at the Santa Ana office. Apparently that's this officer's main job. He said it shouldn't take long and was a bit surprised that the DMV made me do it considering I was the original owner. Sounded like a pretty straight forward guy.

Ran an extra neg- battery terminal cable to frame (under the battery support bracket) and an earth cable from under the battery support bracket straight to the motor. They both connect to the same bolt as does the earth cable from loom. Cleaned up the frame to motor earth cable behind the rearset and reinstalled.
The starter motor rpm increased substantially even with full choke (enrichener).

Replaced my front brake lines due to this :

Not really sure what did this , general opinion is moisture under the sheath its been a bit wet here lately
bit of heat from the lines and somehow expanded . But no track day or heavy braking so not convinced
I could of generated enough heat to boil water.
No brake fluid had leaked or no solvents or heat used near or on the bike.
Lucky I have a friend with a heavily modified S4R so his parts bin is always well stocked for me to pilfer  ;D
Thanks Brian  [thumbsup]

Mechanic suggests one of my caliper pistons was not returning ( maybe due to moisture and dirt ) resulting in pad drag on the rotor
causing heat build up.
on the one side the lines cooked.

Got these billet master cylinder mounts that were intended for mirrors, but thought they'd make a nice way to mount my reservoirs. Had to drill/tap/install helicoils so they'd work with M6 thread shoulder screws. Nice and sturdy and I think they look decent too.

Tried on the new ArmourBodies tank cover:
(http://sconnor1.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Modifications/ArmourBodies-Tank/i-xMZDNrX/0/M/IMG_0041-M.jpg)(http://sconnor1.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Modifications/ArmourBodies-Tank/i-zrTK8VX/0/M/IMG_0042-M.jpg)

It feels a lot more sturdy than the original covers.  Then again, I am doing this as several of the mounting points on my originals have broken.  I went to half a dozen different fabricators to see if anybody was willing to try and make something similar in aluminium or steel, but they all felt the shape was too complex.  Now I need to look for a painter and choose a colour scheme.

I picked mine up from ECS today!!! it's was a long, cold winter and while the weather has been nice for a few weeks now here in the northeast, I'm happy to say I'm finally back on two wheels -  Ive gotta give props to Matt and the boys there, they did an excellent job.  Belts, valves, new battery, and a bunch of other stuff that needed attention after 4 years of ripping around, but I must say the bike is running better than I ever remember - well worth the extra time it took me to get it up there.

Left from ECS and took advantage of their proximity to Bear Mtn in New York state - did about 100 miles this morning and it was perfection.  [evil]
