Title: Coming up on 15k tuneup need some info
Post by: EEL on July 14, 2008, 08:16:47 AM
From my previous thread posts some on you may have noticed that I have a cheap (and sometimes lazy) bastard.

That being said, I'm coming up on a 15k valve adjust for my S2R. I have an EMS shim kit but knowing my luck, I'm positive that I'll end up having all the closer shims on my S2R about the same dimension. Since the EMS kit only comes with one shim per specified thickness, I'll be screwed.

So I had a thought. Let me know if this makes sense.

If I spend the 150 bucks on some MBP collets, I'll be able to add about 3 thousandths of the overall closer shim thickness. Most likely this will be more than the closer gap and all I'll have to do is sand down my existing shims. Instead of measuring shims, placing an order with EMS and having my bike down for a week. At my 7.5k check my closers were off by about .0015 of an inch. So I know they're getting looser.

Someone needs to confirm that there's no flaw in the logic.

S2R 800 or S2R1k, and which year?

Your closer clearances were .015" at 7500 miles?

S2R 800 05

OOPS!! Forgot a zero there. .0015" . One of them was the others were a tad less, I just gave the worst case scenario. I just figured I rode it a bit harder than most...

Sorry I modified the original post before I scared others..

The only flaw I see is that for the cost of the collets you could buy a lifetime supply of shims for the bike  well probably 18000 miles worth. [moto]

In this case laziness > cheap nature. 125 + shipping for longer service intervals and no downtime for the bike...
