I'm thinking of selling my old bike (Dorsoduro 750) and gettin an used Monster. After reading lot of reviews I'm also considering Triumph Street Triple. I haven't tested the Triple yet, but have sat on one and I know I would need to change a lower handlebars (or risers) for it. Monsters, at least the old ones have a riding position I'm after.

I'm buying used and these three bikes are the ones I'm mostly looking at the moment (that might change when new bikes come to the market if someone buys one of these)

Ducati Monster S2R 1000, 2006, 6800 €, 35000 km. Red with white wheels. Has Ducati Performance Race Kit (Termignoni system etc.) and some small adjustments. All the services are done in schedule.

Ducati Monster S2R 800, 2006, 5600 €, 24000 km. All black (used to be orange, but all the plastic parts are painted in black). Pretty much stock. Also well serviced.

Triumph Street Triple, 2008, 6400 €, 20000 km. Green. Arrow low-boy exhaust, power commander, Öhlins rear shock and front springs and lot of other stuff too.

And since I'm looking for used bikes, I might consider some other Monsters too if something good comes up.

The prices might seem high, but that's how it is in Finland.

The Triumph seems the smartest choice, but my heart says Ducati and that's all that matters. I'm going to test the Triumph anyway so things might change.

I've always (read: always when I have been thinking of buying a motorcycle) wanted Monster. I tested couple last summer (620 and S4R) and now I want one even more. The red S2R is probably the best looking naked bike I know. The black one is cool on its way, but it would need some modifications to be really special. The stock exhaust is not the best looking for example.

I don't care of the HP differences between the bikes (at least at the moment). The S2R 800 would be the cheapest to insure and the 1000 the most expensive. The exhaust system and the color are the most important reasons I would like to choose the 1000 over the 800. The better brakes and suspension are also something to consider as are the gained power and torque of the 1000.

The only problem is the mileage on the red Monster. At least it feels like a problem. I don't know and that's why I'm writing here. Is the mileage too high? And is the price too high compared to the 800 or the Triumph? I've heard the air cooled engine is bullet proof, if serviced right and this is, but I have heard lot of things about Ducatis, so don't know what to believe.

With services done, the S2R wins  8) It's worth the slightly higher price. The kilometer is no problem for that bike.

Ride the Street Triple just to make sure you're not making the wrong decision. I'm sure it's a good bike, but when you start the Monster with the DP kit - game over. Later, when you twist the throttle from 6,000 revs you'll forget about anything else  [thumbsup]

Listen to stopintime and gwt the red s2r . . .

My 2006 S2R1000 is just about to turn over 50,000 klm It is as good now as the day I purchased it.
I have probably over serviced it always using full synthetic oil and filters usually before the recommended intervals.
Anything that looks like it needs attention I do it before it wares out or fails.
The result is a fantastic motorcycle with more than enough HP for legal road riding and in my opinion a better sounding bike than the four valves
mine having DP ECU full Arrows system plus some ohlins upgrades for the boingers , open dry clutch .
it may run out of breath at the top end compared to the 4V but off the mark it is equal if not quicker.
It has been very reliable and is IMO the best looking bike of the first generation no fridge and plumbing .
If the one you are looking at has been given TLC it would be a good choice .

I have ridden a Street Triple and although it's a great bike I was underwhelmed at street legal speeds (and quasi legal speeds). I couldn't wait to swap back to my old 900 Monster. The lack of low down torque was what I was missing for street riding. My buddy sold it soon after and got another old T150! I'm sure the Speed Triple is another matter.

The S2R 1000 is absolutely beautiful.

I've got an carbed M750 with just over 64,000km on the odometer.  It has been very reliable with just basic maintenance.  Most of the work I've put into it was just changing things I wanted different. 

I wouldn't be scared of the mileage of any of those bikes, and I've very certain the S2R1000 would be an absolute blast to ride considering how much much a 900SS (same motor as M900) is to ride.

Get the one that you really want (color, engine, Termis).  If you decide you want something else, you can always sell it, and most people tend to change up bikes every 2-4 years anyways.

I've always lusted after the red/white color combo monsters  [drool]

My S4 has 25k miles (40k kilometers) and runs like a champ and I've shagged it pretty hard throughout the years. Totally different motors but I wouldn't be put off by the mileage on any of the bikes. Good maintenance goes a long way.

That what I was thinking. But why I'm asking is I don't want to overpay just because something is red an shiny. Buying a motorcycle is no way a rational decision, but when buying from a private seller the price can be anything, so I have to use my brain too. The problem is, there aren't too many S2R:s on the market here (3 at the moment), so I cannot really compare the prices too much.

But still I haven't dismissed the black 800, since I really like the look of some of the black monsters. But it would need at least a tail chop and new exhaust. Probably something like ExBox or BoomTubes, though those are mostly for the looks, if I've understood correctly.

Thouhg I think that has a custom made mufler.

Price the exhaust you would want to put on the 800.  Exhausts can be expensive.  You're right about looks for the exhaust, don't forget about sound too., Boom Tubes are called that for a reason.  These Monsters can get pretty loud.  I have Termis on mine and the entire neighborhood knows when I my M750 starts up.  You're not really going to notice much performance wise just putting a different exhaust on.

I know they are expensive, specially full systems. Since I would not be looking for performance gain, I would be happy with just slip-on. But I want it somewhere under the bike where it would not block the rear (like ExBox). I've seen picktures of some nice slip-ons that mount straight to the udder, but those are hard to find. Some have run just the udder without any muffler, but that might be too loud for me.
