Title: Ignition switch difficult.
Post by: fragile_this_side_up on March 11, 2015, 07:28:33 AM
Bought used 09 696. When i put the key in it takes some jiggling to get it to turn. I'm not comfortable with this. I make sure it's seated all the way in as well. Still have to jiggle. Any tips? I was going to shoot some graphite down the cylinder tonight to see if that helps loosen things up.

Powdered graphite is the way to go.

Although I expect the graphite to fix it, if it doesn't, you might consider taking it to a locksmith and see what their evaluation is.

It could be as simple as having a new key made, or replacing any worn tumbler(s)/disc(s). I confess to not knowing the availability of key blanks, so that suggestion might be wishful thinking. Replacement tumblers/discs should be available since they are common.

i actually have a spare key. problem is, it isn't programmed and the P/O lost the key code card. so i've got to find a way to track that down now for the immobilizer.

That's not good. Without the "Code Card" for this generation, there is no record of that code anywhere. In fact, you have to rub the card like a lottery ticket to reveal that 5 digit code. Therefore, very unlikely the selling dealer would have done that.

Bought it from an individual...

Others with far more knowledge can comment, but if you have any issue with a key or the immobilizer, you'll have to buy a whole new instrument cluster IIRC = $$$$$$$...

New keys, new gauge cluster, and as far as i know, new ecu as well.. In other words, do NOT lose your key!!!

Tried graphite. Still about the same. Works well one way. Doesn't work the other. Key shouldnt be onesided. But then again, some things im finding out on this bike are.... well... in need.

I hear you. Just had two keys cloned. Phew! I was down to one key with no card. The auto locksmiths that Brad put me onto saved the day. I'm guessing that its worth looking up specialist auto locksmiths who have the equipment to "clone" keys. Most places I checked couldn't do Ducati keys, so search around.
Thanks Brad.  [thumbsup] Now there's a place to send people as most places I called just don't have the gear to do European stuff.
Good luck.

Yeah, i may look into it. I'm near Washington DC, so if there is somewhere that can do it, it should be around here. haha. I already have a key cut, just not programmed..

Why cant you just get the immobilizer flashed out? Motowheels and Rexxer allow that. Then it should be just a matter of getting some extra keys right?

At the same time you can flash a new map and get rid of the O2 sensors and have a much better running bike.

I'm not sure why no-one has mentioned this. So if there's a catch here that I'm missing, please correct me.

Is it that simple on a Siemens ecu'd bike?

Worth a call to Motowheels or Redline to find out.

Hell, you can even customize the written message on the dash that pops up during the startup of the bike.

Apparently. Rexxer must have caught up. Brad does it and MW has the Siemens option. Good news.

Check with Donnie Unger at Duc Pond in Winchester which is just up the road from you. No BS. If you can't reach Donnie, ask Nathan. Ignore comments from anyone else there.

Most definitely Tom, Dick, and Harry.  ;D

Will stick by my original recommendation.  ;)

FYI, Bill, Jon, and, Henry also work there. Pretty sure Donnie would vouch for them, and not expect you to ignore them.  ;)
