Title: Official F1 2015 season (spoilers)
Post by: m9hundo on March 16, 2015, 10:53:58 AM
Didn't know if there was an F1 thread so I'd thought I'd start this one up.

Season opener was in Melbourne Australia and Hamilton took the win with his teammate Nico Ros right behind him and Sebastian Vettel in his debut at Ferrari almost 30 sec behind to round out third.

It was a drama filled weekend with only half of the field crossing the finish line

^yes but still a respectable 4th considering his last race.  He also touched on the retire of the last race was his fault for letting go of the clutch early causing the rear wheel to move out of place and the wheel nut was not put on properly.  it looks like both Ferrari pilots have good cars and are ready to do battle.

1.Rosberg scores first win in dominate fashion
2.Hamilton having some difficulty and seemed really frustrated with his performance not to mention his pit stop being compromised
3.Vettel a mere 40 seconds behind the race leader
4. Bottas
5. Kimi losing his cool

An eventful day, a guy from the pit crew who lifts the front end of the car was slammed into by the driver who missed the mark.  Just before that incident the same nearly happened to Alonso in the McLaren but that was because the brakes gave out ending in a retire, shame.

They didn't just get it wrong. It's practically impossible to pass in Monaco. It's just so rare that if someone actually manages it, they replay the pass like 20 times. Unless the tires were coming off the wheels or he was running on fumes, he stays out. Simple as that. I don't generally watch that much F1, but even I was wondering what the make the beast with two backs they were thinking.

I did not watch the race, but a friends said it was a snooze fest. I was only able to watch the first few laps. Vettel used the extra soft to knife through the field. Hamilton had a few seconds lead by the time I turned it off.

Street courses are typically snoozers.  Narrow track + Close walls = car parade.  Racers play it safe and rely on pit stops to gain position.

Post by: m9hundo on June 21, 2015, 09:43:53 AM
1. Nico Ros MERC
2. Hamilton MERC
3. Felipe Masa WILLIAMS

Vettel got shafted by his pit crew resulting in loss of 3rd position to Massa.  Kimi tangled his Ferrari with Alonso's Honda retiring both of them.  Nico got a jump on Hamilton at the start and took the lead in turn 1 and the rest was history.  Good scraps further down the field.

Vettel got shafted by his pit crew...

correction, vettel got shafted by ferrari's wheelnut (and possibly wheelgun) design. they're apparently the only team in the paddock that design both items in-house.

Belgian GP at Spa

Hamilton Flawless 1st place
Nico not so hot start, got swamped but managed to climb back to 2nd
Romain Grosian 3rd thanks to Pirellis' tire giving out on Vettel literally 1 or 2 laps left in the race.

Sort of funny start since the communications between driver and pit are getting less and less due to regulations of coaching the driver.  No communications regarding the bite point on the clutch for the starts. 2 cars retire before the start of the race on the warm up.

Performance of the race was from the russian Kvyat who was blowing by the likes of Felipe Massa and other veteran drivers with a solid 4th.

Mercedes holds dominance with a large margin from 2nd to 3rd.

This championship is between the Mercs. Vettel's tire blew the make the beast with two backs up. That's what you get for pushing the tire.

Title: Re: Official F1 2015 season (spoilers)
Post by: m9hundo on August 24, 2015, 08:35:34 AM
Pirelli said to Ferrari it could do 40 laps but the tire only lasted 28. Nonetheless they did stretch that tire.

Italian GP

1. Hamilton Mercedes +25 seconds over 2nd
2. Vettel Ferrari
3. Massa Williams

Highlights:
Kimi qualified 2nd next to Hamilton and stalled the start and went straight to the back but was able to race his way back up to 6th then inherited 5th due to Rosberg's engine blowing.
Rosberg's engine goes with only 5 laps to go

Drama:
Mercedes radios Hamilton to give it all he has the last 5 laps but would not explain to him why over the radio (we'll explain everything when you come in).  Hamilton admitted he was racing on a scary edge and was not comfortable with what was being asked to do.  Turns out his tires we're below the standard PSI and could be served a 25 sec penalty.

I would've like to see what Kimi could've done at the front, shame for him he's had some strange hi's and lows.

I believe there's a tire pressure issue with the Mercs, and F1 regs. (?)

Just got this on my Twitter feed which resonates what we've been talking about

Lotus is to retain Pastor Maldonado for a third season, saying that they believe the Venezuelan driver remains ‘on the money’.

‘We know we can bank on Pastor,’ said a team spokesman. ‘We love his great yen to pound the track at the Euro races and his pace, oh, it’s top dollar.’

The team admits that Maldonado doesn’t always return the car in one piece but they are confident he can ‘keep it in check’.

‘Yes, Pastor has made the odd paying-in slip,’ our source admitted. ‘But in the end, he always delivers. Usually in a plain black briefcase.’

‘Of course there are critics who say we should let a younger, faster, less shitter driver have a go,’ our mole confessed. ‘But there are lots of reasons why Pastor should keep his seat. 20 or 30 million of them, in fact.’

Well in Honda's defense the field is almost running entirely on either Merc or Ferrari power. I'd say throw Honda a bone just to be competitive then when they catch up cut the cord.

Then again it's their first year and everyone knew they were going to be dismal. Basically it's an entire year of R&D

<threadjack>

"Honda entered Formula One Grand Prix racing in 1964, just four years after producing their first road car. They began development of the RA271 in 1962 and startled the European-dominated Formula One garages with their all-Japanese factory team (except for American drivers Ronnie Bucknum and Richie Ginther). More startling was the fact that Honda built their own engine and chassis, something only Ferrari and BRM – of the other teams still running in 1962 – had previously done."

Russian GP

1. Hamilton
2. Vettel
3. Sergio Perez (gifted by Kimi)

It looked like Nico Ros could've challenged Hamilton for the win but dropped out early in the race do to mech failure.

It was a three man fight for the last podium position between Sergio Perez, Bottas, and Kimi.  Perez on 40 lap old tires was being reeled in by Bottas on the final lap with Kimi in tow. They both blow by the struggling car of Perez and then Kimi tries to muscle his way on the inside of Bottas which results in a collision causing Bottas to retire and Kimi's car injured. Perez takes 3rd back and Kimi nursed the Ferrari back for a 5th.

In the end race direction penalized Kimi which dropped him to 8th and 3 points on his super license.

i think that was a bit different. Laguna is a zoning nightmare and just isn't equipped for big events, no affordable facilities. CotA's issues are all due to funding by the state.

Oh hell yes it is. I've been to the Glen to see them. I've also seen on two separate occasions a NASCAR driver and an F1 driver switch cars on a road course. The NASCAR guys did fine, but the F1 guys couldn't handle the cars.

I'd be good with replacing F1 with IndyCar at COTA.

I haven't seen the others, but the Lewis Hamilton-Tony Stewart switch was opposite.  The track was a little damp and Hamilton was hoonin' it up drifting the corners while Stewart was tip-toeing around all scared about crashing.

^^^ Yeah he was drifting it, but it's not a drift car, i.e. He couldn't race it properly.  ;)

He beat Stewart's lap time that day.  Hamilton didn't start letting the rear step out until towards the end of his run after they told him to box and he had um communication issues with his headset.

The details of that new rules package are compulsory 3 liter V-12 engines, 6-speed manual gearboxes, and MegaSquirt II ECU. *

And they have to look something like this: *

*I was told this in strictest confidence by Linda Ronstadt last night. In my dream.

They need to overcome the dirty air problem, which make the front wings stall thereby preventing cars following close behind each other. Seems to me that the only way to do this is to bring back ground effects to a limited effect. Maybe a spec floor tray with ground effects built in that all cars have to run would be a solution? This would allow less complex wings and less dirty air.

We can say many things about MotoGP, but it's not half as dysfunctional as F1

So not all teams have hybrid engines? And if they do it's too expensive to stay competitive for the little guys? So hence the entrance of V12's with power balancing equations?  [bang] I'm lost without motor sports on tv, no MotoGP, no F1! I'm going through withdrawals

You need a MotoGP subscription, there's tons of stuff to keep you occupied in the off season.
