Title: Engine Mods impact Engine Lifespan?
Post by: The ModFather on April 16, 2015, 11:26:13 AM
I was wondering if some mods to the engine specifically things like a Big-Bore Kit reduce the life-span of the engine or components within the engine? I would think the additional heat and force generated by some of these mods were not accounted for in the original design and could shorten the lifespan of the engine. Is this true?

All things equal, yes.  All things are not always equal though.  Lots of old 944s running around

OMG  [bang] True!

... at least if flogged the way it begs for.

On the other hand, if well balanced and smoothly running, you could have equal fun with less flogging than you 'had' to previously.

Yeah right.. 99% of us will just flog it more.

I used that mentality when trying to convince my wife that it was actually "safer" to have an ohlins shock on my bike than having a stock sachs. Reality is i'll just take the turn at a higher speed negating any real safety advantage.

I think that Monstro Belle got around 100k out of her 944. Not sure when she did the Mod though.

a 100hp 750 is possibly a grenade, pre 98 definitely without some serious parts replacement.  900 has the same bottom end (except rods) as a 996 pretty much, so good for 10,000 rpm and 130hp.  it depends on how far you are moving from the original design.

later (2001>?) engines have better oiling too, and that makes a long term difference.

944 should be negligible in general use.  some high comp, high hp motors (track use esp) with earlier blocks (95 ish) will crack the vertical cylinder stud section out of the cases.

Thanks Brad for a very informative and useful answer to my question!  [thumbsup]
