Title: Monster 695 Belt Change
Post by: jay3712 on April 25, 2015, 07:56:30 PM
Hi all, thanks to this forum I've been able to do some basic maintenance on my new to me 2007 Monster 695. I have service records from the PO and the only thing that it was due for is belts. So I did some reading and bought new ExactFit belts from CA Cycleworks.

Here are the steps I followed so far:
1. bike on stand, shifted to 6th gear, removed spark plugs, removed belt covers
2. lined up the marks on the top cylinder, crank, and horizontal cylinder (no mark, it was just very slightly forward of 12:00) by turning rear wheel forward.
3. Noted that tension was a bit loose on both. was able to fit 7mm allen key between fixed roller & belt on both belts.
4. Loosened tensioners and removed horizontal and vertical belt
5. Installed new vertical belt. Put it over the lower pulley first and used tape covered needle nose pliers to hold the top pulley in position while installing over top pulley, still lined up to the mark.
6. Installed horizontal belt, again lined up with the mark on the front pulley (crank still lined up)
7. Rotated rear wheel to check for any binding, all appears good.
8. Fitted 5mm allen key between fixed pulley and then firmly pushed tensioner and tightened into place (both h & v belts)
9. Checked marks again and rotated rear wheel, all seems good, no binding.
10. Re-installed plugs and shifted into neutral turned key on.
11. Hit the starter and bike cranks, runs and all seems good for about 8 seconds and then it stalls.
12. Removed plugs, shifted to 6th and re-checked that all marks line up.
13. Installed plugs, neutral and hit the starter again - same result but it ran a bit longer when I gave it a slight touch of throttle but stalls when throttle removed

I'm really nervous now because this bike has never had any issue at idle in the 3 weeks I've had it... hoping I haven't royally screwed something up here. So I need some advice on what to do next...

Thanks in advance!

it's make the beast with two backsed.  i'll give you $10 for it.

people often don't see the funny side of that.

as we are not there with you, and this sort of thing is very much visual, if you take a few photos, say of the belt positions with the dots lined up, it will help us share some light on your issue.

conversely, if the engine is cold and you don't have the fast idle lever activated i'd possibly not expect it to idle straight up.  are you just a little too paranoid?

Buy an engine turning tool. If its going to interfere, you'll know that early and easily and hopefully the damage will be less.

Not saying the wheel method doesn't work. Its just a lot easier with a turning tool

Did you disconnect the gas thank when you did this? Did you drain the gas tank. I wouldnt think you did for a belt change but better to ask than not. If so did you prime the pump a couple of times before starting? Its takes a couple of cranks the first go around.

It's been pretty warm here so  I haven't been using the cold start lever in the last week or so (SC).

I raised the tank and propped it up while changing the belts, but put it back down before cranking the engine. I thought it could be a fuel issue but figured that the fuel pump would be self-priming and I have probably 3/4 of a tank of gas (same ethanol-free that  I always use).

I don't see a problem there.

Alright, I advanced the cold start lever just a bit and started it up... It sounded odd a chugged/stumbled at the beginning but here is a short video of the startup:

Let me know what you think... the audio is kind of terrible. I think it's ok, maybe some of the stumbling is due to rotating the engine by hand - I'm not sure what that does to the fuel supply but that would seem the simplest explanation... I'll go start it up a bit later and see if it is better.

Thanks for the help!

Happy to report all is well... I'll attribute this to lifting/lowering the tank and turning the rear wheel a bunch while doing the change to triple check everything was lined up.

I started it up again and let it idle to 120f, then took it for a ride and got it up to 220f. It really feels solid and one thing that I noticed at 7k rpm I don't get the high pitched whine that I used to... This is probably placebo effect and "whine" is not really a good word to describe it. Before I removed them I could pretty easily slide a 7mm hex on the old belts...

Really glad I went ahead and did this, thanks to all for taking a look at the pics and letting me know I didn't screw this up. I'll do a few rides and check tension again.

Ride safe!
Jason

Suggestion for the next time. Once you have the marks all lined up, also mark the old belt.
Then transfer the marks to the new belt and count the belt teeth and make sure everything is the same.
Then slide on the new belts, matching dot for dot.
