Title: MOB Wrench Day 8/2. PM for my address!!!
Post by: DarkStaR on July 14, 2008, 07:06:19 PM
MOB Wrench Day
August 2nd, 10:00am

This will be taking place @ my place in San Bruno.  For those that have not been here before, request for my address via PM.

If there is something you want to get done: get your parts, and tools together.

If you will be doing work that will require a special tool or stand, now will be a good time to get it, borrow it, or ask if any of us have/can bring one.
Let me know if you need to drop off you bike/parts/tools in advance.

If you have any questions about what kind of work will be possible/tools needed at this event, just ask.

There will be some knowledgeable people present to help out, so noobs are welcome also.

Auto parts stores, a Moto shop, and hardware stores are about a mile or 2 away if needed.

If you don't need to do anything to the bike, but just want to help/watch/learn/hang-out, that is fine too.

Last time I hosted a wrench day, food and drink was an issue (I eat out most of the time).  If people want to help pitch in, we can fire up the BBQ.  FYI:  I suck at cooking

Should be a good day, too bad I won't have a free weekend until the 16 of August... :( Looks like I'll be doing lots of wrenching by myself

I will be in. i suspect I may not need any work on the bikes, but I'll be there to help.

If all goes well, I'll be there on the Kawasaki  ;D

I need to do valves on both bikes, but am busy that weekend... maybe another time.  I get grouchy when I do valves--not so much fun to be around anyways.   [cheeky]

Hmm..good timing. I've got a lot of things I could use help with. Count me in for some brake bleeds, I've got a 15k valve adjust coming up but I'll take care of that at a different time. I'll do the standard chain tension, brakebleeds, clutch bleed, etc..

I might be there to watch. I have a 15K coming up but this is probably a month early for it. I definitely have a lot I can/should learn.

If I can get someone to help me out with holding the valve in place, I'll do my valves on the front (horizontal) cylinder. I'll be putting in MBP collets too if anyone is interested. You guys can get a feel for what its like to measure choser shims and check for binding, blah blah blah.

Hey! I'm IN.  I would love to see you guys working on some bikes.  I would like to learn.  I don't need anything done on the bikes but I can help cooking or something.

I'll send you a message asking for your address.

Would love to come to a wrench day, my first.  Haven't modded the bike much but I would love to get that damn beer tray off my monster.  Is help with a tail chop too tall an order?  And congrats on the nuptials Mostrobelle.

Hey Maveric,

You have 2 options:

1) Buy a kit.  This should include everything needed. or
2) Find what materials you'll need to make brackets for the tail light, and plate.  Signals, plate light, and frame plugs will be optional.   [evil]

Going with option 1.  The kits I have been looking at all have the mounting brakets/screws and plugs included but I'd really like to integrate the tail lights.  Is that a difficult wiring job?  Also, if I want to get that nice clutch sound do I only need to replace the stock clutch cover with an open/vented one?  Is this a bad idea if I have to park outside?  Thanks.

You don't even need to buy a new clutch cover, you can just have it open, or modify your stock one.

Just buy a boatload of washers and place them inbetween the engine and the clutch cover. This will space out the clutch cover. Just do this on each bolt and you have a vented clutch. Total cost will probably be about 5 bucks. Get stainess washers. If you can find shims that would work too..Get the smallest radius washers that find the clutch cover bolts so you dont have interference with the clutch itself.

i doubt i'll do this on wrench day, but if i were to lower my gauges, the only cutting required is of the "U" bracket, correct?

also, does anyone know a good place in the area to purchase some of that vinyl business that Celli used on his bike?

thx,

Yes U bracket have to be cut, but there is more to it than just cutting it. I will be there in case you can make it, and you can see how I did mine.

I can do some basic suspension set ups. I'd like to keep it down to a 10 bike max for set ups. Get them set to a good, even starting point, make some notes for each bike, and then y'all can fiddle with them from there.

is it possible to adjust the ride height & pre-load on my 620?  are these things even adjustable on my bike?   :-\

Doent even have to do that, cut out the spacers that are in the rubber gasket and use those.

The 620's have a solid, cast, non-adjustable ride height link. You will have to purchase an after market ride height bar and install it.

I will answer for Conrad in his absence.

Yes, he will supply the beer.

Joyrides in the Miata are fine, but no more than two people in the trunk.

If you don't finish, you may load up the tools you need from him and bring them home with you.

Do not pee in the front yard.

Borrowing parts from his bike is fine.

Please bring cigars, bacon, and scotch for someguy and duckwrench. Thank you.

I may need to change my brake pads. I'm going to take a look at them tonight and see how they look. If I need to, is this something somebody could help me do?
If yes, where is a decent place to order from? Shall I just hit up my local Duc shop?

Well I canceled my other plans so I might make this who knows..

I need to install a 520 chain kit, align and install new fairings, install rearsets, new steering damper, quick gas cap, new aluminum front fairing stay as well as change my oil.

It's a bunch of crap so I might just stay at my casa to keep from invading your workspace.

Since this so local, the wife and I will try and stop by and say HI.  We leave on our road trip the next day, so our bikes should be not needing any last minute work, but it will be fun to annoy those who are working on their bikes  [evil]  [laugh]

I will send a PM as soon as I figure out how to use that function on this board...  [roll]

Usually most people arent up for doing valves. Last time I did them it took a while since I was helping others (cdroiunkginhg). For anyone who is planning on doing valves. You need to get your bike there the DAY BEFORE. Valves cannot be adjusted if the bike is warm. If you get there at 10:00 and want to get started you'll be waiting pretty much the entire day for your bike to cool down.

Luckily Conrad's not too far away from the San Bruno CalTrain station. If you see a guy with an assload of tools on his back walking down the street at 9:30am on Saturday. Make sure your wave. Better yet..Give me a ride!!

Beer, scotch, bacon, steak.

For some reason, the beer I stocked seems to diminish at an exponential...Go figure.
At the moment, I have 1/3 bottle of Bulleit, 1/3 bottle of JD, and 3/4 bottle of Ballantine's. We'll see how much of that last till then.  :-\
I just bought 4lbs of thick cut maple bacon.  Again, we'll see how much of that last till then.  [bacon]
Steak is a negative at the moment.  :'(

For those who care to get some hands on training on doing valves: Be there at 10:00am sharp on Saturday. I'm actually going to be at Dark's the night before taking off all the covers and relocating all the crap to gain access. That means that when morning comes, I'm full speed ahead on adjusting valves.

I'm willing to walk though it step by step for anyone who is interested. Crash course will include the following steps needed to do valves:

-understanding timing
-finding "Top Dead Center"
-removing belts
-measuring opener/closer clearance
-removing shims
-HOW TO MAKE SURE YOUR DON'T DO SOMETHING STUPID AND DROP YOUR VALVE INSIDE YOUR MOTOR
-sanding shims (if needed)
-checking for "binding" on the closer shim
-adjusting belt tension
-syncing throttle bodies
-checking engine compression

Bike is a 2V 05 S2R 800, so this valve adjustment is exactly the same as every 2 Valve monster ever made EXCEPT the 695, 696 and M1000. Basically what I'm doing is about 600 bucks at the dealer and pretty much covers about 70% of all the major maintenance you'll ever need to do on your bike.

The only thing a dealer might do that I'm NOT doing is adjust trim values and TPS reset. I dont have a VDSTS or a lambda sensor (nor do I know how to use these yet) but thats an hour of work at munroe motors for about 80 bucks.

So I found out that I have an appointment that was moved to the day of wrenching :( I still want to be able to show, but I can't stay long. It sounds like some people will be there promptly at 10am, so that's good news for me. I'll probably be there right at 10 as well so I can learn how to change my brake pads, but then I have to jet by noon. I'm really disappointed I can't stay longer and learn about valves and more.

Oh! Also, I found my cheat sheet on adjusting front suspension. If anyone wants to learn how to do this for yourself, feel free to stop by. Just bring a calculator and a notepad. I'll provide the tie-wraps and tape measure. I think Dark's got an extra front stand that may be available.

Rear suspension is much harder but and dependant on ride height so be aware of this if thats what you want to do.

in terms of food, that way we can all know what is
missing and what we have. Just an Idea so we don’t
have too much of the same thing.

Good Idea!  [thumbsup]

If your plan to bring something, please post what it is, and I'll modify the 1st post accordingly.

First:
I'll be bringing the scotch  [thumbsup].  And no, none of that blended crap - time to educate some of you blended scotch drinkers: "I'll have a scotch on the rocks please, any scotch will do as long as it's not a blend of course. Single malted. Glenlivet, Glenfiddich perhaps, maybe a Glengowry...any Glen."

First person to post the name of the movie gets the first pour, after the wrench-day host that is.  It's an easy one.

Second:
I've got the tail chop on the menu for Saturday but I'd be a moron not to take advantage of the fact that there will be so many knowledgeable people there.  Anybody have any suggestions on things I can do to my duc?  It's an 03 620ie so from what I've read suspension modification is a no-go.  The bike's only got 1800 and change miles on it since right after Mostrobelle came with me to buy it less than a year ago I was hit-and-run by a big ass van a few months later.  I know I'm approaching the 2000 mile service which involves timing but since I can't drop off my bike the night before that's out too (but I'll be watching the timing done on other peoples' bikes intently).  So any suggestions?  It's pretty stock.  Thanks in advance.

That would be Mikey (John Favreau), ordering his scotch from the cocktail waitress in the casino, while "kickin' it old school" with Trent, from the all time classic "Swingers." [beer]

I have that movie memorized, line for line. It's actually quite disturbing. [laugh]

Yes. You should call around and pick up 1) the filter and 2) some oil  [cheeky]

The local motorbike stores should know what you need.

If you're by a ducati dealer get a crushwasher for like 50 cents. otherwise we can reuse if necessary.

I like Motorex in my track bike.

I run whatever decent oil that is on sale in the Monster.

Cheapest oil for sale in the Husaberg.

OK, just called Munroe and asked if they have the above.  So the Parts guy said I need the filter, oil, a screen and a couple of crushwashers....Oh, and he added that he hates working on his own bike, just wants to ride it... guess he was making a heavy plug for me to bring the bike in so that they could do it...  :-\

But I would like to learn!  So please count me in for Wrench Day tomorrow!  I'll bring some rum that I brought back from Nicaragua, some brats, buns, tomatoes, and mozarella...let me know if you need anything else!  Thanks in advance to DarkStar and others for showing me the way!  ;D

If you're going to take off the oil screen, you might want to check with dark to see if he has the gigantic allen required to pull it off. otherwise, you could do this at a different time. Its like a 14mm allen or something..

I would have brought mine but I didnt think anyone was going to take the screen out. Its not really required, you could skip out on it.

I hope everyone likes smooshed hot dog buns...I picked up the filter, oil and crushwashers... a) I had no idea the filter was so small and b) I had no idea the can of oil was so frickin' BIG!  Skipped the screen.  Hmmm, will be an interesting ride to DarkStar's tomorrow am... with two bottles of booze and that BIG thing of oil!  [laugh]

DarkStaR: Thanks for hosting an unforgettable MOB Wrench Day!  I had a ton of fun - I am once again overwhelmed by the DMF community and the generosity of its members!  Special thanks to:
1. DarkStaR for the hospitality, tools, other gadgets involved in changing my oil.
2. DuckWrench13 for adjusting my forks - yeah, you're right, it has changed the way I ride, I don't feel like I need to hold the bike upright anymore when I make turns (didn't even realize that I didn't have confidence letting the bike make turns)!  I feel like I have a new and bigger SS!
3. Juan and Jammen for showing me the way on the oil change
4. Ptam for those out-of-the-world short ribs and (whether you like it or not) you've got the job being GrillMeister
5. Someguy for the bacon and never-ending enthusiasm for DIY oil changes

Overall consensus was that I don't need synthetic, racing, pink oil that costs $54/gallon next time...  [roll]
Great meeting everyone yesterday.  Here's to scotch, bacon and brats!  I'll post pics on my Flickr account after my errands today...

Thank you DarkStar for allowing us all to use your place. I'm really glad that the MOB is such a great set of people. My new brake pads work great and I'll be able to change my g/f's brake pads myself no problem. That's worth more than just the money saved.
Today I was still in a motorcycle maintenance mood and raised the fender on my g/f's Ninja so she can run larger tires for our track day.

Mmmmm, motorcycles.

Thanks again, everyone.
