Title: Monster 696 seat very uncomfortable Post by: jonnydubbs on May 06, 2015, 07:29:46 AM I downsized from my Harley Sportster 1200 to a 2014 Monster 696. I'm enjoying the greater maneuverability and almost equal horsepower of the Ducati, but there is a problem which I suspect is a common complaint, especially for guys. The slope of the seat causes squashing and much discomfort to the genitals. I've done a few rides of about 150km lately and after about 15km I'm in considerable pain. I've seen pictures of the touring seat for these bikes, but I suspect that the seat will still not stop the rider sliding down the seat into the tank.
I've owned 17 motorbikes and this is the first one that has given me such riding discomfort. I'm toying with the idea of peeling back the cover and adding more foam to the front of the seat to level it out a bit but I'm not sure that the cover will stretch enough. Another thing I could do is lower the rear end to change the angle of the seat a little, but I don't think it would make enough difference. I do not intend having children, but still would like to keep my equipment for recreational pleasure. Has anyone found a suitable solution to this problem? Title: Re: Monster 696 seat very uncomfortable Post by: Anchorism on May 06, 2015, 12:08:19 PM Ive had the same problem with my wifes 696 when riding 2up. We had a DP seat (ducati performance) for it on the side and I assure you it is much better. Mind you I am 6'2 so its rather uncomfortable anyhow.... but still a blast.
Title: Re: Monster 696 seat very uncomfortable Post by: stopintime on May 06, 2015, 12:15:39 PM If the other seat doesn't treat you better, maybe you could lower the rear part, instead of lifting the front.... (if indeed the cover isn't flexible/large enough to raise the front)

Is it better than the Sargent and Corbin too?Title: Re: Monster 696 seat very uncomfortable Post by: DarkMonster620 on May 06, 2015, 02:23:09 PM Is it better than the Sargent and Corbin too? haven't tried those here in this specific model, but, if I were to choose one for my bike, I'd go with either one of those . . .the DP touring for the M696/796/1100 is way more comfortable than OEM . .. I did a 200kms round trip on a M696 with one and it was comfortable as well as a 300kms with the OEM one and some numbness was present . . . Title: Re: Post by: Raux on May 06, 2015, 04:42:09 PM The dp seat is a bit taller and doesnt throw u forward, that being said, even on stock seat scoot back 1-2 inches and use your thighes to keep you from sliding forward.

Title: Re: Monster 696 seat very uncomfortable Post by: MotoZen on May 07, 2015, 06:50:04 AM I got some padded underwear from Cycle Gear. I think they were designed with dirt riders in mind. But they've been great for me on my 821. About $50 (Fox brand, if I recall). The problem on my seat is not so much the angle as the softness, or lack of. When I tried the seat in lowered position, I slid into the tank a lot more. But the undies took care of the junk. I'm back to riding the seat in higher position. And the padded undies make riding for 3+ hours relatively pleasant for my ass.
Title: Re: Monster 696 seat very uncomfortable Post by: jonnydubbs on May 08, 2015, 01:20:17 PM Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions. Much more helpful than some that friends have said. Castration was one suggestion! I've already tried numerous times to sit further back and hold the position, but the thigh muscles tire easily from that. If the footrests were mounted further forward that might change that dynamic.
At AU$623.94 the Corbin seat is not an option for me. The Sargent at AU$519.00 is also very expensive. I've seen the touring seat on eBay for US$251.37 plus $58 postage and am considering that option. I hadn't thought of cycle pants; certainly worth a try on my bony bum (I'm 5'10" and 127 pounds). I'm not keen to buy a seat without first trying it, because of the cost. I'm going to try a makeshift custom built cushion on it before going drastic or expensive. I'll secure the cushion with straps and Velcro under the seat. I'll attempt to post some photos and report on the comfort level when it's finished and fitted. Title: Re: Monster 696 seat very uncomfortable Post by: MotoZen on May 09, 2015, 04:27:53 AM Johnny Dub: check these out. I've got em. Not as good as a seat upgrade. But these have made a huge difference in my riding comfort. It has GENEROUS cushion in the entire area between your legs, front to back. There are also pads on the hips, thighs, and tailbone.

Rizoma bar can help too as it's a bit taller with 2" more sweep. ;)

Another option is to find a local auto / marine upholster and have them recover your stock seat to the way you like. I looked into this after I had my touring seat and just extra foam and fabric would be the same as a touring seat, but to my liking. Title: Re: Monster 696 seat very uncomfortable Post by: Two dogs on May 11, 2015, 01:53:55 PM Agreed with above post , stomp grip on the side of the tank really helps sliding forward under braking. Missus Dogs 696 was for me really uncomfortable to ride , lucky enough to pick up a near new DP seat second hand for $100 with the tank grip it is now much kinder on the wedding tackle . But it does seem taller making you feel perched on top rather than in the bike . Title: Re: Monster 696 seat very uncomfortable Post by: koko64 on May 11, 2015, 04:19:28 PM I use an expert custom auto upholsterer who asked that I "ride over for a fitting". He makes the seat fit you and it was worth every cent to have it tailor made. He has all the latest foam and cover tech available, and blends foam types into the design to achieve the result. He took into account my hip/knee/lower back position, my aches and pains and specific build/shape. The difference is huge with no numb bum or sore spots. The guy does show cars and motorcycle seats as a specialty.
If you can find someone that good and are willing to pay the extra then it's worth it. I took a stock seat to him and it was about $300 AUD, but it beat anything I've tried from Sargent, Corbin, etc. It might be less important when you're young and resilient, but as you age, or if you do big miles, or have sport/work injuries it means a lot. Title: Re: Post by: Raux on May 13, 2015, 07:04:34 AM I found a local boat upholstery shop that shaved my st2 seat added foam in front of passenger to prevent sliding and used my stock cover.... cost $60
Title: Re: Monster 696 seat very uncomfortable Post by: MotoZen on May 18, 2015, 07:12:48 AM "wedding tackle ." I must soon find a way to get this term into a conversation. Title: Re: Monster 696 seat very uncomfortable Post by: jonnydubbs on May 18, 2015, 02:11:40 PM Thanks again for the suggestions guys. I've made a cushion that is held in place with seatbelt webbing and Velcro and it's made a huge difference. I haven't done a long ride yet but have done about 2 hours and no problems. I've been given the name of an upholsterer by a friend and will visit him to see what he would do and charge. If too much I'll see if I can add the cushion foam under the original cover myself, with some streamlining of course.

Title: Re: Monster 696 seat very uncomfortable Post by: astevens54 on June 06, 2015, 03:40:11 PM I can't speak for the DP, but the Corbin is broader and flatter. I am very pleased with my Corbin on my M1200. Can someone tell me if DP's seat is broader and flatter than the stock seat?
Title: Re: Monster 696 seat very uncomfortable Post by: Dochunt on June 06, 2015, 04:31:50 PM I just put on the DP seats last week on my M796. I got it because it is the tallest of all the aftermarket seats
They are ok. They do transmit more of the exhaust heat for some reason. I think the Sargent seat would have been better Title: Re: Monster 696 seat very uncomfortable Post by: astevens54 on June 06, 2015, 06:04:48 PM My M1200 with the Corbin Gunfighter

Title: Re: Monster 696 seat very uncomfortable Post by: koko64 on June 07, 2015, 01:07:51 PM Ah, you're in NSW. Got it.
I reckon ask the bike shops who the best custom seat bloke is in Newcastle. I think its good to get a fitting, so I'd ride over to the guy first so he can see the whole job before dropping the seat off later on. Title: Re: Monster 696 seat very uncomfortable Post by: StephenC on June 07, 2015, 03:21:30 PM I've got a couple of guys lined up. I'm actually pretty happy with the shape of the seat, I would just be looking for a cosmetic change, to match the new paint scheme I'm planning. None the less, if there was a motorcycle seat expert I'd use them preferentially, hence the enquiry.
