Title: Love the Monster
Post by: Dochunt on May 28, 2015, 10:04:23 AM
This is probably old news to you guys out there that have had Monsters for a while, but I will share my thoughts.
Having had a number of Japanese bikes over the years I decided to go European.
Looked at the Triumphs, BMWs and Ducatis.
Got a great deal on a 2012 M796 with 700 miles.
I have had it for a week and all I can say is WOW.
It is not the fastest or the most technically advance but my God what character.
The Italians know how to put soul in to their bikes and cars.
This is the first bike I feel is a living thing.
Is this nuts or are there other people out there that feel this way?
I hope I am not alone

Your description fits exactly what everyone who rides one says about Ducatis and especially Monsters. The feedback and feel from the motor and chassis is addictive. The sound of the motor was described by a sportbike magazine as "intoxicating".
Welcome to this big crazy family. ;D

Thank god there a at least 2 out there.
When I start talking like this with my friends who have not had a Ducati, they look at me funny :)

Many more than two!

For reference, I have had:  GSXR-600, GS-1150ES, GS650E, CB550, Supersport 900 and an M750.  The one that still parks in my garage after all the others are gone?  The M750.  Monsters are special.

From what I have read on this forum I am now dreaming of a S4RS to live in my garage with the M796.

Saw a nice 2007 S2R 1000 for sale near me, what is this bike like to live with , is the S4RS much better.
Digging the craziness

The S2R is a 2 valve bike and maintenance can be DIY, or will be roughly half of what an S4RS is at a shop. People unfamiliar with 4V maintenance can be put off by the complexity.

The S4RS is an SBK motor and has about 50 or so more hp with roughly the same torque. The S2R has roughly 80ish RWHP.

How much do you need? [evil]

80 BHP will be enough, my M796 is about that much and I am happy with it, I love the look of the S2R and I am getting a good deal.  DIY maintenance will be good for me , I used to do it on my old bikes 20 years ago and want to start doing it again.

Your 796 does not have the torque of the S2R 1K.

Two completely different bikes.

I have realized that, thats why I am thinking of getting the S2R, maybe work on it and use it for track or shorter faster rides, and keep the 796 for everyday street riding.

Torque is awesome.  My 900SS had plenty and was a sheer hoot to ride.  The S2R will be even MORE fun.  The "off the line" feel of the S2R will be pretty impressive compared to the 796 IMO.

Wait until he fits a 14T to his 796.  8) No S2R 1000..., but MUCH better.

Not much, AFAIK, except symetery and losing that ugly box.  ;D You can pick up the Euro shroud for that side. http://motowheels.com/i-6921561-ducati-air-deflector-left-side-m696-796-1100.html (http://motowheels.com/i-6921561-ducati-air-deflector-left-side-m696-796-1100.html)

OK,  I will get the bars and the sprocket done first.

If you intend to keep the bike a while, it might be a good idea to pick up that Euro left side shroud while it's still available over here. Since there are no more new 696, 796, 1100's, they might not bother to reorder.

When you get around to removing the evaps or have the dealer do it, use a screw rather than a vacuum cap on the crankcase connection.  ;) Vacuum caps can leak over time...

Awesome, I do intend to keep this bike, I will order the part.
Thanks again
