I'm off to look at an '02 900 tomorow that's a wreak. The guy selling it dropped it three years ago, his story was he was coming around a long bend at around 80 km/h (50 mph) when the bike slid away from under him hit the kerb and flipped end to end!
Most of the damage looks cosmetic, tank dented to crap, handle bar snapped, front wheel broken and smashed headlight. The motor appears to have no more than minor gravel rash on the clucth cover. Since the accident the bike has been sat upright on paddock stands in his garage.
My questions:
How long can the engine sit without turning, being fired or oil squirted down the cylinders?
If I attempt to turn it over should I oil the cylinders first?
Any other comments or suggestions when looking at it?
It still has the oil in the engine it had at the time of the accident and has't leaked any. The motor has 20,000 km on the clock (12,000 miles). The bike is in Perth, Western Australia which is hot to warm dry part of the world.

remove the spark plugs and try turning the engine over by hand. should turn easily with minimal to no resistance.
next with the spark plugs still out put a little oil down the spark plug holes don't go crazy. a partial oil cap full will suffice.
next have the fuel and ignition system disabled. check fluid oil level if its good then continue.
with the spark plugs still out i crank the engine over for 5-10 second intervals to build up oil pressure with 20-30 seconds breaks. don't want to overheat the starting system. i do this about 5 times. you can do it more if you like.
once the oil pressure is built up in the engine again, recheck oil level one last time.
reconnect fuel and ignition system and reinstall the spark plugs and attempt to start. a little smoke will come out of the exhaust since you pre-lubed the cylinders with oil.
