Title: Not pretty! - M900ie Engine Tear Down.
Post by: MonsterMadMarty on June 21, 2015, 01:22:19 AM
A few months back I picked up a 2002 M900ie in a pretty bad state! Since then I've been pulling it apart.  Today I started tearing down the motor! The horizontal cylinder was showing a compression of 100 PSI & the vertical 80 PSI.

The Nikosil on the horizontal barrel, and the piston is showing some pretty bad scaring!

The vertical had a busted ring (ring was still in situ) and damage to the top of the piston.

I'm new to this so was wondering what would have caused the cylinder wall scaring on the horizontal cylinder & the piston damage on the vertical? I'm guessing the busted ring would explain the low compression! I'm also guessing the horizontal cylinder is beyond repair?

Cheers  [thumbsup]

The cylinders can be cleaned up and re-plated, then new hi-comp pistons while you're there.  The hor. piston looks like it was dry for a while, maybe check the oil passages.  What does the vert, head look like?

If you rebuild that engine pull all the oil galley plugs including the crank and have the parts hot tanked.  Any remaining nikosil will destroy your rebuild.

Cheers guys, engine isn't going to be rebuilt Nikosil plating in Australia is stupidly expensive.  Last time I looked into Nikosil plating I was quoted $500 per cylinder plus freight two ways as the only place that could do it was in Melbourne (I'm in Perth almost 2,000 miles away).

Its way cheaper to buy good second hand barrels!

Maybe send yours to Ferracci as a core for big bore cylinders that are already done ? Seems legit.

Did I mention I have good second hand barrels? (Attached to the rest of the motor :P )
