Title: 800 S2R noisy bottom end at idle
Post by: cobrajet on July 29, 2015, 06:00:01 AM
My 06 800 S2R has developed an intermittent noise in the bottom end that sounds like it may be coming from the clutch/primary drive area. Sound kind of like a loose hub. Bike has 63K of commuting on it, mainly between 4 and 5 grand. Belts and rollers are fresh this season. IIRC the sound started last year.
Noise can only be heard for sure at idle or slightly above under no load, clutch in or out no difference, in gear or out, no difference. No noise under the smallest load I can apply. Could this be coming from the pseudo slipper clutch, don't know how that is designed or if it has surfaces that can wear? My other thought was maybe the clutch had a cushion hub that has gotten loose but on other bikes I have had with that issue the sound would change when applying the clutch. Because this is my everyday summer transportation I hate to pull it down for an exploratory if this is just a middle aged 620/800 sound. thanks

Some of the S2R800's have a sprung cush drive on the primary gear behind the clutch basket.
Some of those have suffered broken springs.

Looking quickly, I can't tell from the parts catalogue which ones.

Update on issue. Finished out the years riding and recently purchased 695 clutch to swap in thinking that there was broken springs in the clutch hub cushion and I could eliminate that potential trouble area. Pulled the clutch, cushion drive was fine but I did find a piece broken out of the washer on the primary drive gear that retains the three springs that load a thin secondary gear stacked on top of the main gear that is apparently there to quiet primary gear noise. The springs load the thin gear to off-set it slightly from the primary drive gear to eliminate any backlash  between the drive and driven gear. One of the springs was coming out where the washer piece was missing and the spring and washer showed lots of wear. Because this gear is stacked on  a standard width drive gear the 800 driven gear is thicker than a 695 driven gear. Bottom line, a 695 clutch is not a direct swap in without also installing a 695 drive gear on the crank.

Very interesting. Speeddog, Darkmonster and Howie assisted me in dealing with a similar issue on an MTS1100. I ended up removing the anti backlash gear. It comes off easily via a large circlip on the big bore. Is your set up similar? I wonder if this is an option for you. You get 900 style primary gear noise when you do it. One of those guys will chime in I'm sure.

696 and 750 primary drive gears fit and don't have the dual mass mess.

However, the drive and driven (clutch basket) gear should be a pair from birth, so that means a 696 APTC basket + gear or a 750 pair (non APTC)

Just got back from the local stealer Megastore, apparently they don't stock parts. I can see not having the washer or bad spring for my primary but no valve collets either! They are 40 miles away, won't ship and I really don't think they were looking at the right parts page anyway. Took two of them ten minutes to get logged in to the Ducati parts system and other twenty just to find the primary gears. Then the diagram he was using didn't show the springs, there was a washer in the picture but it was retained by a nut and not a clip. Wasted trip. Anyone have a spare spring and washer left from pulling this set-up off? If not could you recommend a dealer to call that's knowledgable and will ship? thanks

Using the DCS for newbies is not easy . . .  Transmision parts should be looked at "Engine > Fiche 7 and 8(IIRC)" . . . Then look for Fiche 10 for Clutch . . . should be same as 620

As said, IIRC

Edit:

AMS formely Pro-Italai has an online or dowloadable parts catalog and they ship, also Ducati Omaha and MotoCosa, at least I have purchased from them and they ship

Individual parts are not available for that assembly, AFAIK.
Complete gear is part# 17020771A, ~$400.

Or

Remove clip, washer, and springs.
Reassemble and run it.

Don't forget the little O-ring sealing the gallery between the clutch cover and crankcase.

hey cobra what's the current status ?     did you get this fully sorted in the end ? and has it affected the 'noisy' clutch ?

I'm back up and running now, much quieter, almost all the primary noise is gone. I ended up MIGing in the missing section of the washer and working it back down to plane. Guess I find out how well it holds up.
