I recently purchased a 2006 S2R 1000, which is giving me a lot of trouble (stalling out, surging badly ... not-rideable). In an effort to figure out the problem, I tried getting the service records from the dealership that sold it to the previous owner (who in turn sold it to me). They were able to send just one record so far, but if the information on that record is accurate, I may have a new problem. Given the odometer recording on the service record, the previous owner will have had to have ridden it for only about 100-150 miles over 2.5 years. Given the way he talked about the bike at the time I bought it, that seems highly unlikely.
Questions: 1) what could previous owner have done (unplugged speedo cable, which I gather goes to rear wheel???); 2) is there any way at all to get an idea as to actual mileage, perhaps via information on the ECU?
Thanks for any guidance!
Other than physical signs like rotor wear, what parts have been replaced, maybe seat condition, year of manufacture on the tires (obviously these ideas lack any real validity) no. Nothing in the computer will tell you. Keep in mind, mileage is far from the best indicator of service or life left in a vehicle. See this thread
The PO may have ridden the bike for a period of time with the sensor disconnected or inoperable or may have replaced the gauges with a new or used set.
The symptoms you are talking about on that model are often just poor initial set up. Could be valve guides too, but I think that issue was solved by 2006. Start with a compression or (preferred) leak down test. Since you don't know the real mileage since the last service, new timing belts, valve check (guide wear check at the same time), and all base settings (cam timing, base throttle setting, CO balance, TPS and throttle synch need to be confirmed. Also make sure there are no vacuum leaks.
A really good fix assuming all is mechanically good is a DP or reflashed computer eliminating closed loop. Motre power, cooler running.
Many thanks for your reply! Likely it was disconnected. Dealership sold to PO in 2012 at ~19,300 miles, I bought from PO a month ago at ~19,450 miles. PO claimed he rode it a lot.
Good advice on possible problems; I'm attempting to troubleshoot myself as I'm very far away from any kind of Ducati shop at this time.
I've described the problems in much more detail here: http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=71419.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=71419.0)
Even after new battery, new spark plugs, new fuel filter, new air filter, and attempted cleaning of throttle bodies (with seafoam) ... all with guidance of a Ducati mechanic by e-mail ... nothing has helped so far.
Will try a couple more diagnostics but will eventually need to truck it back to a shop.
Thanks again!
Why not ask the individual you bought it from about the mileage discrepancy? In the US, it is a felony to alter odometer readings.
I once had a dealership mis-enter the mileage of my vehicle on the service invoice. I could tell they performed the work (and I trust the dealer), so I didn't worry about what the mileage on the invoice actually said.
Just a consideration.
