Title: S4R Engine into '01 900ie Frame?
Post by: MonsterMadMarty on August 08, 2015, 02:25:41 AM

Apart from the obvious water-cooling side of things, will an S4R motor fit into a 2001 900ie frame? Will the dual swingarm fit? Can the rear suspension handle the extra horsepower?

Cheers, Marty  [thumbsup]

I'm pretty sure there are frame crossmembers that will interfere with the intake components.

I'll check.

Just to be clear, you're wanting to use the '01 frame's hoop-style suspension, yes?

Frame cross member at tb and engine mount bolt size need to be checked

Top crossmember just forward of vertical cylinder obstructs the intake of the vertical cylinder.
Diagonal crossmember on the lower bay, over the horizontal cylinder obstructs the intake of the horizontal cylinder.

So, not a plug-n-play by any stretch.

The crossmembers could be conscientiously reconfigured.

Given that the 1st gen frames are ~25mm diameter main tubes vs. ~28mm diameter for the 2nd gen, I wouldn't just cut out the crossmembers and nail it in there.

IIRC, '01 and later frames are 12mm engine bolts, so that would be OK.
Earlier frames can be drilled out to fit 12mm bolts, but there's some nut and bolt flange diameters that need fixing to do it.

You'd need to deal with the difference in airbox mounts, fab radiator mounts, and .... and.... and
