Title: Metal pieces in oil (pics)
Post by: Goggles Pizano on August 15, 2015, 06:54:13 PM
I've searched and seen furry magnets as well as pieces of springs so I'm not too concerned, but thought I'd throw this up here just to be safe as it seemed to me to be a bit more than normal fuzz.

I've had it both ways...

my Monster has shown similar with no issues.

My 996 showed more and has real issues,

How many miles on the bike?

Unknown mileage on engine.  I was told 2100 when I swapped it in (900 into a 620) 6000 miles since then.  Valves done 3000 miles ago.

Oil changed and new belts at engine install, oil changed prior to valve service (valve adjustment performed by Ducati dealer) and oil changed 2900 miles and I see this.

I don't recall what the magnet looked like the last 2 oil changes, but if had something like this I probably would have posted it here.

What vintage 900?

Lots of crank shaft plugs backed out on those.

At that mileage if the screen was never cleaned it might be normal.  Galley plugs backed out on earlier 900s.  You would see what looked like aluminum finger nail clippings on the screen.

Screen was cleaned with all oil changes.  I didn't bother to check if the piece on the screen would stick to a magnet, I assumed it was the same as the drain plug...  I will pour old oil through filter and see what I find.

Purely coincidental I'm sure, but my neutral light started turning itself off this morning and stalling the bike while warming up. I figure switch on the back of the engine, but you never know with my luck.

Make sure the connection on the switch is clean and tight.

Poured used oil through paint strainer, minimal debris found, but I cannot see residual left in plastic drain pan. Cut open oil filter to inspect, found absolutely nothing using magnet from a hard drive.

At this point I will probably run the engine through the season and tear down over winter.  I have a 620 to throw back in if I need to.

Thank you very much for the responses! I will be sure to follow up if I find anything or any failures occur!

Neutral problem was the wire I assume, pulled (was clean), squeezed the end connector a little bit to tighten it up and started fine.   [thumbsup]

Don't rush to tear down your engine.  Some metal on the drain plug and ab occasional shard or two on the screen is not uncommon, particularly in the first 12 to 18K miles.

EDIT: Started second topic as I am not sure they are related.
