there's a discrepancy in the information that i've found regarding the chain slack and the rear axle nut torque spec.
i appreciate any comment regarding which value to trust.
bike: 03 620 i.e.
chain slack
sticker on the bike: 25-27mm
official ducati workshop manual for 2002 620/750 i.e. (sec D4, p40): 20-25mm
rear axle nut

regarding chain slack, what measurement would be dangerously loose?
63 ft lbs for the ST framed (your 620) Monsters. I would go for 25 mm. A little too loose is better than too tight.

couple questions,
when measuring the chain slack:
1) should the bottom position be forced down or measured at rest?
(about 5mm difference)
2) when forcing the chain (either up or down), how much force should be applied?
moderate or until the chain moves no longer?
(about 2mm difference)
I don't force mine to extremes when measuring.
A little loose is better. Always find the tightest spot on the chain and adjust to that point

i understand that to mean you don't use excessive force to push/pull it to extremes. ok. got that.
what i meant with the first question, is: do you only push the chain up (and let it flop down by gravity)?
or do you also pull it down?

I guess I'm saying it doesn't matter.
If you measure at the chains tightest point, and you can see 25ish mm of slack...pull and push as hard as you want..., then the factory spec will serve it's intended purpose and you won't bend the transmission output shaft.
I don't pull and push and add 5mm and call 30mm slack good. I've never bent the shaft. ;)
