Title: Valve Adjustment Piston Head Cleaning
Post by: iBoesen on September 05, 2015, 02:46:01 PM
Hello all,

I am doing a Valve adjustment on my Ducati 620 Dark IE,

I was wondering if it mattered if I took the head off or not, to do the adjustments.

I know the piston has to be a TDC when making the measurements but I also want to clean the piston head.
From what  I can see it looks pretty nasty.

If I remove the head, is it possible to do the valve adjustment with it being out of the bike?

Thanks

Yes. They are easier to adjust with the heads off the bike, but are sure you want to take the heads off? That's going to a great deal of trouble.
How bad do the pistons look?

well, you can do the valve seats and valve adjustment would be tighter  . . . . and maybe do some polishing

Maybe now is the time for porting, cams, big valves and big bore kit? ;D

it's a 620 . . . just a good polish and a bit porting should suffice . . .

Yep. I reckon just adjust the valves and leave the heads on. ;)

Thanks for the reply guys, I don't plan on riding the bike for awhile beaches I want to go over all the details. I don't believe it ever had its 12k Servise and it is going on 17k miles :/

I'm replacing the timing belts now. I didn't read instructions on how to swap them and I took one off and spun the gear on the side.
I now see that that was a bad idea.

Is that pretty tuff to adjust back to normal?

Do you own a manual specific to your bike?

If you want yo work on your bike it is important to have a workshop manual and also LT Snyders 2 valve manual. Our spoñsors should be able to help you. Read the manuals carefully before commencing any work. Consider having a Ducati tech finish the job and you can research and prepare correctly for next time.
The cam pulleys need to be lined up correctly to their marks as does the flywheel. Ducati Suite and Ducatitech sites (California Cycle Works) have guides to do these tasks. Failure to correctly set up the cam pulleys can result in expensive mistakes.

what he said, specially the bold yellow statement . .. OEM manuals are available on the web for a few bucks

NOW:

DO NOT TRY TO TURN ANYTHING IF ENGINE WAS NOT SET UP CORRECTLY, YOU WILL HAVE NO IDEA WERE TIMING IS AND IF YOU TURN YOU COULD BEND VALVES

I've been there, done that, difference was/is, I had the manual/s from LT Snyder and Haynes manual, I also have the OEM manual, here the links to the manuals and some tools

So i took one of the heads off the bike.

Does this look bad? Do you think i should clean them?

If so how would you go about doing it?

Thanks for all the help.

It's not broken. Don't try to fix it.

Put it back together and ride it. [thumbsup]
