Has Ducati ever done a R Monster version before? Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: Duck-Stew on September 08, 2015, 06:01:40 AM Likely they just "found" the missing 15hp that exists on the Diavel 1200 motor but not on the M1200S engine, added some "farkles" and possibly a # plate to the top triple.
Oh, and a few extra #'s onto the pricetag. Regardless of my cynicism, I'm curious to see what this is about. The 1200 is growing on me... Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: Slide Panda on September 08, 2015, 06:20:31 AM added some "farkles" and possibly a # plate to the top triple. Oh, and a few extra #'s onto the pricetag. WHAAAAAAT Stew, Ducati would never never do thaaaat ;D Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: EvilSteve on September 08, 2015, 06:51:43 AM The 1200 is growing on me... I found the 1200S to be pretty boring when I test rode it, hopefully the R brings the fun back. Scrambler was a more engaging motorcycle IMO. Are you just enjoying the bike more?Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: stopintime on September 08, 2015, 08:50:04 AM I'll be very surprised if this turns out to be worthy of the R label.
Besides what Stew mentioned, maybe minor trail change and lower bars. The engine/Corse departments must have had a fight with the marketing department over this - and lost [bang] What Ducati needs is a ballbuster in the StreetFighter segment - to show customers who's boss when it comes to performance. Not a best seller, I know, but a signal 8) Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: HotIce on September 08, 2015, 08:53:42 AM More than rumors, tells the story of a new SF with superquadro powerplant [evil]
Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: DarkMonster620 on September 08, 2015, 10:29:45 AM if they did way with passenger pegs . . and stew, how could you? say Ducati would add farkles and price tag? THIS IS unthinkablebut true, almost
Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: dbran1949 on September 08, 2015, 10:49:33 AM Apparently different frame as well. Has Ducati ever done a R Monster version before? Yes the S4R and then the S4RS Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: Slide Panda on September 08, 2015, 11:00:39 AM No, the S2R and S4R were not R bikes in the sense I mean. The S4Rs was probably the closest.
I'm talking the mildly mental bikes like the 1098R and 749R etc that had a variety of race type stuff (and big price tag) from the factory. Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: duccarlos on September 08, 2015, 12:05:56 PM More than rumors, tells the story of a new SF with superquadro powerplant [evil] I would rather see this than a Monster with more bling and a couple of more horses. I still think that a Monster should be air-cooled so what the hell do I know. Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: EEL on September 08, 2015, 02:32:32 PM Maybe they shed some of the extra weight. The newer monsters were a significantly bloated to what they needed to be.
Dry weight 182kg vs the prior model's 168kg. They are probably feeling the heat from the 1290 superduke and feel they need to respond accordingly to the challenge. Hopefully this doesn't end up turning the monster design philosopy into a horsepower game between manufacturers. Then the old monster "Simple is better" adage will be truly gone forever. We're nearly there already! Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: danaid on September 08, 2015, 02:33:48 PM I would rather see this than a Monster with more bling and a couple of more horses. I still think that a Monster should be air-cooled so what the hell do I know. Agreed ^ It is bold of Ducati calling the bike an 'R' model vs just an updated 'S' model. Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: DarkMonster620 on September 08, 2015, 04:23:57 PM They are probably feeling the heat from the 1290 superduke and feel they need to respond accordingly to the challenge. and BMW S1000RR naked derivate . . . Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: Duck-Stew on September 08, 2015, 07:17:27 PM I found the 1200S to be pretty boring when I test rode it, hopefully the R brings the fun back. Scrambler was a more engaging motorcycle IMO. Are you just enjoying the bike more? My comment about the 1200 growing on me was about its aesthetics. I don't own one... Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: The ModFather on September 09, 2015, 06:40:04 PM I dont get all the negativity for the new Monster. I test rode the 1200S and was pretty impressed. The powerband was pretty smooth and had some serious torque, the handling was good, the brakes were excellent and the seat was probably the best Monster stock seat I've ever sat on. I also like the looks of it specifically the tank, the headlight and how they cleaned up the tail. My only gripe... it's not an aircooled bike. There's something about the aircooled Ducati's that I love the sound and no ugly radiator and liquid cooling bits hanging up front. I get why they had to go aircooled at this point and I'm slowly growing accustomed to it. (I think). I also havent heard a 1200S with Termis on it. That could sound amazing I dont know. Let's see how this R pans out. I am curious. The 821 did not impress me nearly as much.
Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: mickb on September 09, 2015, 11:39:49 PM give it the 1200 DVT engine, improve the breathing / exhaust to give it a few extra ponies, engine modes (wuss/not sure/yee-haw), sort out the footpegs, tidy up the LH side aesthetics, drop some lard (10-15kg), lower the gearing, and don't charge a bl**dy fortune for it....
I'd buy one :) Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: danaid on September 14, 2015, 12:15:12 PM More farkles, 160hp, pope hat like my 1100S, might be upgrading to this bike!
Title: Re: Post by: Raux on September 14, 2015, 02:57:13 PM And new rearsets one of my bigger issues
Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: TitanMonsterS4R on September 15, 2015, 01:46:45 AM Power delivery sounds great for the M1200R but I guess I was expecting a distinct styling queues to differenciate the M1200R from the other Monsters. Maybe it just comes down to livery or they're following Porsche's way of distinguishing the models "if you know Porsche, you know the difference." I'll still keep my S4R somehow nothing other than the old M900 or the M1100S gets me to even think about selling or adding another model to the stable.
Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: oldndumb on September 15, 2015, 06:18:04 AM They fixed everything I did not care for on the 1200 and 1200S.
Msgd my dealer to put me on the list and will do paperwork on Saturday. [wine] Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: SDRider on September 15, 2015, 09:35:07 AM They fixed everything I did not care for on the 1200 and 1200S. Msgd my dealer to put me on the list and will do paperwork on Saturday. [wine] Agreed. The passenger pegs/exhaust hanger on the first generation Monster 1200/1200S are just awful. I wouldn't buy the 1200/1200S but this looks decent and has some nice features. Count me in as interested. Might make a nice stablemate to my Multistrada 1200 S. :D Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: duccarlos on September 15, 2015, 10:11:23 AM http://www.motorcyclenews.com/news/new-bikes/2015/september/new-ducati-monster-1200r-revealed/ (http://www.motorcyclenews.com/news/new-bikes/2015/september/new-ducati-monster-1200r-revealed/)

Various Ducati department heads officially confirmed no such bike is being worked on currently."What?! There were rumors of a naked Panigale?? [evil] Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: duccarlos on September 15, 2015, 10:21:25 AM Ducati is making a motard?
I was actually looking at bikes other than Ducati since I was simply not enthused at the Monster/SF line-up. This might have just changed. Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: EvilSteve on September 15, 2015, 11:47:14 AM Ducati is making a motard? THEY ARE?! :o [laugh]I'm curious to see if they do any better with the EURO4 tuning for the motor than they've done with the 2015 MTS (it's really bad). Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: DarkMonster620 on September 15, 2015, 04:15:12 PM OK, next HM will have a larger engine . . . that's all for now
Title: Re: Post by: Raux on September 15, 2015, 06:54:59 PM Hopefully all the positive changes will trickle down to the 1200 s, 1200 and 821 to make them more appealing...but seriously contemplating a used Streetfighter S now.
Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: SDRider on September 15, 2015, 08:04:44 PM Looks pregnant dogin'
I want one! Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: mickb on September 16, 2015, 12:24:15 AM looks like they took my wish-list, & ticked all the boxes :)
other than a tail-tidy, looks good to go, down-side is its likely to be expensive :( Title: Re: Post by: Raux on September 16, 2015, 04:10:29 AM Saw 20k euro on a post...not sure if thats official... I was thinking it would be SF 1098s pricing
Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: Mugen939 on September 16, 2015, 06:46:20 AM If this is more than 18K USD it will not sell well in the US. There's just too much great competition in the naked market right now. The Tuono, Super Duke, and BMW R being prime examples. If you ask me this is what the S should have been and the 1200 should have been the current S. It looks more like Ducati realized the quickly shifting performance target that this sector has and is trying to catch up. But in typical Ducati fashion they're trying to market their mistake as a winner instread of dropping the base 1200 and lowering the cost of the S.
All of my local Ducati dealers have left over stock of 1200 S models. I'm glad I skipped that GEN. Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: Slide Panda on September 16, 2015, 06:54:31 AM Yeah - pricing it over the SD R would be terribad for the sales

Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: Duck-Stew on March 16, 2017, 01:15:35 PM I'm wondering how much our local shop will deal on the '16 M1200R they have lying around... [evil]
Although, the '17 in black is super hot. [drool] Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: oldndumb on March 16, 2017, 01:38:57 PM I'm wondering how much our local shop will deal on the '16 M1200R they have lying around... [evil] Although, the '17 in black is super hot. [drool] I have a 16 M1200R with 6000 miles on it that I will be selling myself to make room for a SS939S I have on order. Last month, when I told the sales manager that I was not going to trade it in, he advised me to ask for $16,200. Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: beethoven on March 16, 2017, 03:53:37 PM Hey OND Love to hear how you find the new SS. When is it due. I'm thinking of changing my ST1050 for one. I believe you used to have an ST.
Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: EEL on March 16, 2017, 03:55:05 PM I'd rather get a 1200S. Shorter wheelbase, same trick parts, I think the shock is larger too to kick the bike up. A tad less horsepower but at least it comes with cornering abs and a quickshifter that goes in both directions. (edit : 2017 Version)
Title: Re: Monster 1200R Post by: nheaney696 on March 17, 2017, 09:58:27 PM I was looking at getting the 1200R (the 796 is paid off) but 20K is ALOT. I'm contemplating the 959 (Artic white) Panigale. I know the riding position is totally aggressive and this will be my first fully faired bike. The new monsters look so fat with all of the water cooled nonsense up front. IMHO. ;D
