Title: 6k Service - what can be done at home and what at the dealership?

I'm at 5500mi on my 05 S2R and am thinking about the pending 6k blood-letting.....

 I was figuring on asking the shop to hold the oil change and I'd do it myself, after I get the bike back.  That led me to wonder what else I could do myself.....

?

Im assuming you still have your factory belts.  with some tech knowledge, you can do that yourself with the tools you most likely already have.  The belts should be changed at 12k or every 2 years.  The "hardest" or most intimidating part is the valve adjustments. 

I think the things you are suppose to replace/change is the oil, oil air and fuel filter, and check a bunch of stuff like chain tension, nuts and bolts, proper lube, and check the valves. 

The replacing of the filters are really easy so you can do that yourself.  If the valves are off, than you can ask the dealer just to change that and possible the fuel filter as that is a little tricky but not hard to change.

I've watched Chris' instructional video for 2V adj and and am going to leave that one up to the shop. 

Also seen Chris' 'changing of the belts' video - I'm on the fence about that one.  While I think I could do it, there's a lot at stake if it's not done right.  That worries me.  I had a '79 VW Rabbit and '84 Ford Escort that I changed the cam belts on in the driveway.  Both went fine.  The Ford's belt broke on the highway and did no valve/head damage.  So, when you're putting the new belt on, you're not too concerned.  ;D  I think I have a handle on the fuel filter job, as well.

Well, good luck to you on your DIY stuff.  I would recommend that you invest in some front and rear stands.  I do all my service work but have yet to tackle the valves.  Let me say that having stands really help when working on your bike.  Come round 12k, you will have to change your fork oil and get a new chain and this is where having stands really pay off. 

I also have an s2r800 year 05.  I recommend the stands from pitbull.  It will cost you $300 but i would say that they have paid for themselves by allowing me to service my own bike.

I hear you on the stands.  I have Bike-lift rear and T-Rex front.  i got em initially cuz i don't ride much and didn't want flat spots.  Since then I've been really surprised at how handy they are.  Even for just chain cleaning/adjusting.

The belts usually come off for valve adjusts so adjusting your own belts will save you $0.00

If you can do every thing but the valves and belts you should save 1-2 hours of shop rate.
