I may have a clutch slave problem. 2009 M1100 43,500miles. Rizoma reservoir and OEM slave. Everything works normal right now.
Recently I have had a small bit of fluid on the floor under my bike. The bottom of my engine is a terrible mess in general due to road grime and whatnot. I cleaned it up a few days ago trying to find the source of the leak. I also tightened the oil drain plug about 1/8 of a turn.
After a couple of days of riding after it was cleaned I got a few drops again today about an hour after I got home from work. I just don't think it is oil, what I think it is is hydraulic fluid from the slave mixing with the assorted gunk that has collected near the front sprocket.
Since the reservoir is Rizoma I cannot determine the level of the fluid. There is a “window†but it sure as shit isn't see through. I took the cap off and because everything is black I couldn't tell jack.
If it is my slave failing, is this what I would expect to see? Additionally, aren't there o-rings on the rod that the slave pushes? Could it be one of those?
Thanks for reading and helping,
Mark
The o-rings on the rod seal engine oil in.
If the slave is failing you'd likely see mung running down the side stand, and or drips from the sprocket area.
If you don't add fluid to the reservoir...and the clutch stops disengaging...
then you found the problem. ;D
I meant to include that I have cleaned the area around the front sprocket as well as I can without taking things apart. Now that it is a lot cleaner I'll see if I can trace the source.
I'll start carrying fluid with me! [laugh]
Just for the sake of argument, if it is the slave, would the fluid be coming from where the slave and the engine case meet?
Mark
At 43K the slave is a good bet. Only three bolts to remove and inspect. Look for clutch fluid dripping from the weep hole.
When mine leaks the fluid appears inboard of the joint between the slave and cover.
Ok, it is the slave. Do they get "fixed" or replaced with cool trick bits from Oberon or Ducabike?

Replacement only.
Keep in mind that if you go with an aftermarket unit you might not get the same disengagement...sometimes they drag.
The pull, however, will be easier.
OEM replacement.......unless you are vain and drawn to shinny objects as I am.
My experience has been with leakers from DucaBike and CNC. Currently using an Oberon.
AFAIK, Oberon and YoyoDyne are the only ones who offer a lifetime guarantee.
Again, unless you get perverse pleasure from lightening your wallet, go OEM. :)
I have talked to two different dealerships (one being AMS in Dallas) and they BOTH told me that OEM has been discontinued/unavailable!
I know they have transitioned to wet clutches but goodness, how many dry clutches are still out there?

I put a Yoyodyne on my old bike, oh, I guess about 6 years ago. Still leak free with the new owner, about 40K on it.
I ordered the Oberon from Monsterparts. I placed the order and received an e-mail confirmation and no shit, 45 minutes later I got another e-mail telling me that Jeff has already generated a tracking number for my package. That is incredible!

Yet they still offer a replacement seal for the slave in my 96 M900.
Hard to figure.

~~~SNIP~~~
OK, after a moment of WTF, I've figured it out, I think.
The '09 OEM slave is the same unit they've had since '02 or so.
And they used it on all bikes, wet and dry clutch.
In '12 or so, they changed the clutch mechanism, fitting the pushrod with a cross-pin, and new slave cylinder, such that the pushrod will be less likely to spin.
The pushrods now all come with the pin, the previous version is no longer available.
If you look up the old part number for the pushrod, it spits out an updated number.
For some reason, the parts system does not give an updated number when you look up the old number for the slave.
[bang]
Not that it matters now since I have already ordered the Oberon, but are the "new" OEM slaves backward compatible? Someone else might benefit from knowing the answer to this.
Mark
AFAIK, they're backward compatible.
I'd ask Ducati Seattle before spending any money....
Follow up:
The new clutch slave didn't fix the leak. I was due for the 45,000mi service so I brought it in and had the dealer look around. They diagnosed the issue as the counter shaft seal and the oil rings on the clutch pushrod. Those items were replaced. I picked up the bike yesterday and so far, so good.
How much did that set you back not including the Oberon slave if I may ask?
Various Spacers, O-rings and Seals totaled $50 and 2 hours labor ($190). The total cost was $240.
Of course this was added to my 45,000 mile service, so I left some coin there.
