Title: DIY fork swap on '99 M900 (monster city) - tips?
Post by: Destructobot on October 07, 2015, 07:49:31 PM
Took the bike out on a long ride a few weeks ago and noticed the front end felt chattery, clunky, and generally loose and terrifying in corners.  I looked around a bit and found that apparently the forks on my bike are not original - they're non-adjustable, whereas the Monster City came with a fully adjustable setup.  Amazingly, that same night someone on ebay was parting out a Monster City and had the correct forks in great shape for $320.  I snagged them and they showed up last week.

Anyway, I took it to my local shop and found out that they no longer work on bikes.  Took it to the place they suggested and those guys only work on Harleys and metric cruisers.  I thought about it a bit and figured it can't be that tough, especially considering I likely won't have to swap the triples.  Any tips or suggestions?  I'm not quite sure how I'm going to lift the front end.  Straps and the overhead beam in my garage most likely.

BTW, I'm considering doing a light overhaul of the new forks while I've got them easily accessible - ie swap the oil and at least check the seals.  Suggestions/best practices?

You'll need a "special tool," AKA a fairly large fender washer with a slot cut in it... go look through the tutorials here for useful instructions.... I think the thread is "Showa blues."

As for propping up the bike, depends on what you have available.  I've used jackstands under frame sliders and various other sketchy methods.  Now I have appropriate stands.
