Title: Stalling out at start-up (again)
Post by: czen on October 08, 2015, 01:41:42 PM
Hi All,

I've been having trouble with poor performance on my 2006 S2R 1000 (19K miles), including stalling out, sometimes in 2nd gear while riding, etc.

BUT, it was running well for a while; I thought I fixed it.

Yesterday, after it sat for about 5 days, I could not get it to start. It would stall in 3 different ways:

1) sometimes after idling for 0.5 to 2 seconds;
2) sometimes when I pulled the clutch in;
3) AND, always, when I put it into first gear (with kick stand in, of course).

In other words, if it did not stall at stage 1, or 2, it would definitely stall out at stage 3, every time.

Any suggestions?

I gather possibilities are: clutch fluid/line issue (air bubbles) or other clutch disengagement problems (sticking etc.); OR kickstand sensor; OR fuel pump relay perhaps?

I'm leaning towards clutch because after a long ride 5 days ago, the clutch cover felt hotter than what I would expect (I've only had the bike 3 months so not sure what is "normal" yet).

Just wondered what I should look at first.

Many thanks!

PS - I've also been getting recurring ignition coil/circuit error code P0351, about which I'll post separately.

Hi

1)do a check on every wire on the bike to make sure everyting is peoperly connected .... including the ground that goe's from the crankcase to the frame ... usually its near the  left rearsets.
2) make sure the coils are properly connected
2)test the primery et secondary circuit of the coils whit a multimeter
3)If the coils hare ok .... check the fuel pump

Start from there  [popcorn]

Thanks for that; I'll do a check for sure.

Re #2, testing the coils: please see my other post in Tech ... been having odd results.

Fuel filter could cause that. If it hasn't been changed now would be a good time to do it.

I changed the fuel filter a few weeks ago.

But now that I think about it, there's a small chance I may have installed with the arrow pointing in the wrong direction; I guess I'd have to pull the flange to make sure but I wonder if having the direction/arrow wrong is all that serious.

UPDATE:

I'm now getting more symptoms, which point to an underlying electrical issue, either a bad ground and/or corrosion somewhere, or a bad component - possibly a relay, perhaps a bad TPS or even the ECU.

When I turn the key to "ON" position, with engine still off, I now intermittently get a loud clicking (or buzzing) coming from either the "main" or "ignition" relays, or both - these are the block/square looking things that sit beside the batter (part # 541.4.003.1A)

When I hook up the ECU to read error codes (I use either ScanM5X or TuneECU software), I've noticed the TPS voltage fluctuating pretty wildly, all the way up from 0.5mv to 8mv.

After I tried cleating some corrosion from various points, including the contacts on the starter relay (this is separate from the other two I mentioned, it's round and sits on the right side), the bike fired right up and I was able to go for a ride. However, after 15 minutes of riding, some very wonky things started happening: I surged forward without cranking the throttle (pretty dangerous), I had an engine light come up briefly after switching gears, and when stopped the idle RPMs rose to 3000. When I switched off the bike, and turned the key back on, the loud clicking/buzzing came back.

And this is weird, even though the bike was acting wonky, and apart from the surging, it was the smoothes ride I've ever had since buying it 3+ months ago ... normally it kicks and bucks at lower speeds and below 4K RPMs ... but this time it was smooth as the proverbial baby bottom, even just in 1st or 2nd gear.

I should also mention: the bike throws error codes for both ignition coils after each stall (I originally thought it was after I took the battery out), but also occasionally an error code for "crank position sensor".

Bottom line: this is turning into a "gremlin chase" ... I've been reading up on posts re electrical problems and one thing that's quite astonishing is how often people post a "eureka" solution, only to come back a day or more after to say their problem has come back.

Migth be trottle position sensor or crank sensor ..
Did you make an oil change since you have it ?
If tou do check for some metal flakes on the oil drain plug ....
If someting is bouncing everyewere in the side case ... (like a loose circlip) it can ruined a crank sensor easselly
