Title: Computer Tech Question
Post by: minnesotamonster on July 16, 2008, 09:20:50 AM
Since this is the only forum I frequent and there are some great minds here I figured I'd ask and see if you guys can help me out.

I recently wiped my girlfriends computer and took off the piece of shit vista and put xp on it and put all her drivers back on etc.  Everything is working fine. I downloaded firefox and was making sure things were working as they are supposed to and found an issue.  When scrolling up and down pages, the scrolling is very delayed/glitchy.  Don't really know how else to explain it.  It's just not smooth.  Tried it in explorer and am having the same problem. It's not so much of a problem, it's just annoying as hell. I've done some searching and have no idea what to do.  Any thoughts or ideas???  Computer is an Hp pavillion dv9000 laptop.  TIA.

first things first, in Firefox, check under Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> and make sure Autoscrolling and Smoothscrolling are turned on.

how much memory does this laptop have?  it's not a bad machine, dual core...

Thanks for the quick response Magnus. I'll give that a shot when I head home for lunch.  I hope it's as quick and easy as that sounds.

Possibly the graphics drivers need to be updated?

Some more info....It scrolls fine in all other programs such as word, excel, messenger, etc. It only seems to have the problem in explorer and firefox.

kind of weird that it happens in only firefox and ie and nothing else.  try this:

Close Firefox
Go Start>Run, and type in one of these commands:

firefox -safe-mode
or
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode

This is for starting Firefox in Safe Mode, where only default settings are loaded.

See if it changes anything.

Found this out there:

I would also agree that it could be a video driver issue...

Thanks for the link magnus. Will check that out too.  If it was a video driver wouldn't it do that in all programs tho...not just ie and firefox?

Not necessarily, the way web pages are created is much different than a word document for instance.  You probably have a generic video driver installed which only gives access to like 4mb ram, which would be find for word/excel, but a browser would require more buffer space.  Not to tech out on you, but the more you know...

ok, tried the link, didn't work. Tried safe mode, same thing happens.  So this graphics driver. There is one on the hp website, but it says it's already installed on the computer when I try to download it.  Anwhere else I could get the update you guys think I need???  Thanks for the help so far.
