Title: Used monster research
Post by: rufus1138 on October 27, 2015, 09:59:12 AM
Looking for those of you that have been there, wife has a new purchase 696 (2014) I was riding it till I got my bike (1975 rd350), I definitely need a modern bike to keep up with her on long road trips and I'm going to get a used monster. A while back I was riding hers and got sideswiped in traffic and didn't even go down, more than just a nudge and all that happened was the turn signal got popped out of the headlight bezel, so I'm getting a monster (best modern bike on the planet in my mind after getting hit like that) so the real question is whether to get a m900ie, an s2r1000 or wait for the market to come down a little further on the m1100evo, I have time to wait, what's the prevailing opinion on these models

I would opt for an M1100S, but then I am a luddite! Due to circumstances I have had 2 of them and they are marvelous without the added electricery of the evo. the only thing that got me off of mine was the opportunity to own a Bimota.

I do like the look of the 1100s, same family as the wife's, I'd like to know more about the s2r 1k since I'm totally in love with its swing arm, what kind of engine builds have been done on it and the 900, weight savings for either bike?

I am partial to the S2R 1000, prefer the looks to the newer Monsters. I humbly assert that my S2R is as good a canyon bike out there, thanks to the mods done by owner one.

I have just sold my 1100 and am looking to upgrade to another Gen I design -- I already have a '99 m900. The older monster are so much better looking and so much more substantial for a man to ride. The Gen II bikes are great performance machines but not for longer rides and a little too plastic looking for my taste, for a Monster.

Definitely prefer the look of the S2R-1000 over the M1100, but I'm kind of partial to my EVo.
In an ideal world I'd like to blend the looks of the S2R with the new motor and ABS of the EVO.

The S2R1K is what I Monster should be in that it's the most capacity Gen 1 air cooled. It has everything we love in the Monster, with the exception of the plastic tank. If you have the opportunity to replace it with an aluminum tank, then it would be the perfect Monster.

Carlos, where can I get one of these aluminum tanks of which you speak?!

CA Cycleworks has a "track tank":

There are rumors of others making them, especially after the expansion fiasco.

The only aluminum Monster tanks have been the now rare-as-hens-teeth RoadRacing tanks for the carbie Monsters, and the occasional one from Beater in Japan.

AFAIK, anyway.

You can get a M1000 - steel tank but double swingarm.

I think the M900ie, M1000 and S2R 1000 are great bikes. When they are well tuned they are an almost perfect street bike.

My brother has an M900ieS with hi comp pistons, open airbox and a PCIII. They have open loop Marelli ECU so no O2 sensor. With the hottest OEM 2 valve cams in it from the factory it's a blast to ride. All it needed was some more compression and it's another bike.
The 2000 model S comes with Ohlins rear.

i had a M900 with hi comp big bore kit 944cc. a pregnant dog to start but man, the only bike that ever made me smile more then that was the EVO1100 intake, slip ons and remapped. If you really want to rip your face off then go ride a 1199. [evil]
