Title: Ques: Car Coolant okay?
Post by: CDawg on July 16, 2008, 09:07:53 AM
I'm going to do a bit of work on the S4RS' water pump.  Does anyone know if I can use car coolant in the monster or if I need to use moto-specific coolant?  Thanks!

When in doubt - just use some distilled water.

Being an air cooled rider, I don't know the answer for you - but I'd check the owners manual.  I'd hope it lets you know.

What does your owners manual and/or service manual say?

You need to use a phosphate and silica free ethylene glycol coolant.

What does your owners manual and/or service manual say?

From the Owners Manual:

...add a mixture consisting
of water and antifreeze SHELL Advance Coolant or
Glycoshell (35-40% of the volume) up to MAX mark.

This type of mixture gives the best operating conditions
(thecoolant starts to freeze at –20°C/-4°F).

Cooling circuit capacity: 2,7dm3 (litres). 1

Cooling system Antifreeze SHELL Advance Coolant or 35-40% + water

I have been using NISSAN or Toyota Coolant , silicant free in the S4  50-50 with distilled water., when stripped the coolant system was perfect. in Thailand the S4 runs very hot as its never less than 90f here.

Has anyone ever found Shell Advance Coolant in the USA?  I tried and failed.  I use Motul Factory Line MOTO-COOL.
It's everything free.  No phosphates, silicates, or nitrates.

Apparently, dlearl476 is a Motul dealer.

[laugh] He is right, from my quick search on the net, the Sell Advance products don't seem to be sold in the states.  I would like to ask what everyone thinks of using Distilled Water + Red Line Water Wetter?

I used Water Wetter in my R1 for years and never had any problems.  Any one use this on their Ducks?

That's fine as log as it doesn't get cold where you live or you never ride anywhere that gets cold

Sounds like he's just a regular consumer like most of us here.

No, actually he is a dealer according to posts he made on another forum.  See the Motul oil thread.  Of course, someone could be spoofing his id (snort).

I don't care if he is a dealer, as long as he identifies himself as such so that people know what the score is behind his posts.

Cool! I live in LA so cold is 50 degrees.  I can't recall a night in the 30's....

+1  Unless it is under the marketplace, conflict of interest should be disclosed otherwise it undermines people's confidence with everybody's posts.

Dude, read the forum rules.  I don't post that I'm a dealer because I don't pay for the privilege, here.  (But thanks for the free advertising.  :-*) I don't offer to sell anything I recommend here, either.  If that gets your panties in a wad, sorry dude.  Get over it.  You wanna benefit from the research I'VE done, great.  That's why I post it.  You wanna make an issue of it, do YOUR OWN research and challenge me with FACTS.  Or, just post some lame-assed innuendo insinuating I have some ulterior motive for posting the info I have and look like a dick.  The choice is yours.

But while we're on the subject.  I use Motol Factory Line MotoCool.  (Yes, Hedgehog.  I'm a dealer.  And WTF?  I'll be damned if I don't use the exact same shit in all MY water-cooled bikes.  You want some?  Go to the store and buy it like everyone else does.)

Prior to getting lined up with Motul, I used Petosin antifreeze.  It's made for Jaguars and available in concentrated gallons (50/50 mix).  I still use this in my cars, because $8 something a qt. for pre-mixed coolant is all right for a bike with a capacity of 2-3 qt.  but it gets pricey fast in an auto.  Like the Motul stuff, it's nitrate and silicate free.
And IIRC, Prestone "Extended Life" (the orange stuff, I believe) is either silicate or nitrate free.  I don't use it because it's not free of both, although lots of folks use it in MCs with apparently no ill effects.  It's what the dealer used in my K75 until I found out about Petosin.

See, this is the point I'm making about all this expensive crap.  Show me the beef.  Show me the problems with the cheaper stuff.  You can't, because it doesn't exist.

simmer down, folks.    It's the internet.  Take advice from people you know and trust and don't take advice from others.   Hell, anyone here could be passing themselves off as a Duc tech and in reality be a twelve year old girl.

Sorry, Statler.  Multi-level marketing schemes just piss me off; especially when a dealer doesn't say up-front that he has an interest in the success of a product.  I'll take a break.

fwiw, I have absolutely NO interest in the success of Motul. To label them, me, or my relationship with them as a "multi-level marketing scheme" is pretty hilarious, actually.  If they were gone tomorrow, I'd simply find another good product to use in my bikes.    My OP in this thread was a result of that type of research as I was looking for a "one-stop" solution for my needs, personal and business, and contacted Shell re: the availability of their Motorcycle products in the USA.   Which, as it turned out was a dead end.

I make sure in the future not to share my experience with you so it doesn't piss you off.

just because one person was upset that you didn't post with a big warning on yourself as a dealer of a product, doesn't mean many others don't want the opinion.     I've never seen anyone call out Motowheels for saying BSTs were grea ton a bike.

I think the topic is good.  I think the pregnant doging back and forth about who can make an opinion and who can't is silly and should stop.

Please keep contributing.

Statler,

As I have already stated, I don't care if dlearl476 gives his opinions about Motul products.  Fine by me.  My point is that if you sell the stuff then you have a vested interested in the product you're giving an opinion about, and you ought to make that clear up front.  It's only fair to the reader.

And my point, which I've made several times, is that is against the forum rules.

I had several conversations with mods at TOB and one here re: a "limited" type of sponsorship.  I'd love to pass along the savings I get as a "dealer" to members here like I do on other forums, but as I said in the oil thread, the cost of being a full-on sponsor on the DMF is prohibitive in relation to the volume of business.  The contributions I make, voluntarily, to the other forums are paltry in comparison.  And Statler, please, this is in no way a criticism of the DMF.  I, more than anyone, understand the rules and why they're important and I'm more than happy to comply.  Hopefully we can work something out.  OR, I'm perfectly happy to recommend the products I USE, just as I did here.

Please keep contributing.

Oh, don't you worry about that.   It takes  more than a couple of rounds of "Internet Special Olympics" to shut me up.   [thumbsup]

we're now at more time spent on people's business dealings than on car coolent.

If someone wants to sell stuff here I'd appreciate a minor level sponsorship to help out.  Otherwise no problem saying what someone sells on the side or professionally.  But there's no requirement to do so either so it's a personal choice.

So nothing wrong with saying I am a dealer of xyz brand and I use it exclusively for my own bikes.   But there is a small problem with saying I am a dealer of xyz brand and I can save you money so please contact me if you want to buy a case...unless you help out the site  ;D

Also no big deal to say you like xyz brand and leave it at that too.

so....moving on.....
