Does anyone have any experience in changing to a race ECU on 796 without changing the exhausts?

It came as a package with a freer flowing air filter and Termi cans. Not sure what if any benefit you'd have with just the ECU. Might be too rich as well. Even with the whole $1,600+ package you only gain 3 BHP although it will run a bit smoother down low. For that benefit the price was too steep for me. YMMV...
BTW, there were DP ECU's with and without ABS, so watch that too! :o
Any other way you know of to smooth out the lower rev range.
I have the 14T front sprocket.
install the vizi-tec exhaust valve emulator

So, you are saying that a 696 mid-pipe and flapper delete is a cure for roughness under 4,000 RPM on a totally stock bike. e.g. his and mine? Was thinking a reflash of the stock ECU for richer bottom end was a better answer? ???
FWIW I had my 796 reflashed end of 2011 and was totally disappointed in the result. It was slightly smoother but below 3K revs it's still a beast. Lots of info in "closed loop" and other threads. I got used to it, when moving slowly in traffic or parking lots I just keep the revs up and slip the clutch. Nothing failed yet after 29000 kms :)

yes . . . did it to 3 customer 796 and 3 MTS1200 and 1 Diavel, idle smooth and acceleration one big gulp of air no hesitation
I will get it done.
If it works it will remove the only big gripe I have with this bike.
Ok, I just ordered it.
Should this be installed by the dealer or can I do this myself.

Do you understand that you need a 696 mid-pipe?! ???
Not necessarily iirc the flapper valve default is open so you could just unhook it and remove the motor

You can do it yourself.
1. Lift seat
2. Find connecting plug
3. Unplug factory harness
4. Plug device to factory harness
5. Dismount RH exhaust pipe
6. Take flapper valve cover off
7. Pull cable until you can take it off
8. Valve will remain in the OPEN position
9. Take motor off bike, loose about 1.5lbs
10. Install seat
11. Turn IGN to ON and start, NO check engine light should be on since ECU thinks everything is OK
BTW, instructions do come with emulator ;D
Now, if you want to completely take valve off, take Dremel® Tool and mill the screw heads off and take out

So basically one physically removes the exhaust valve and the Emulator tells the ECU that everything is okay?

Yup
And now the bike revs better in the low range and breathes easier?
And there is no bad affect on the bike?

yes, none
Pulling from a standing start it will do one pull and not the usual, "wait, now, flapper is open" type of hesitant acceleration . . . This from the bikes I have installed
Wow this would be a much less expensive fix than a full Termi install
So, I did the Modulator install this morning.
Took 30 minutes, very simple. Did not take out the valve motor yet as I want to see how things are first.
Thanks for posting the instruction DarkMonster as they did not send any with it.
Took a 40 mile ride thru some town traffic and some back country roads.
It is so much better in the lower revs. [thumbsup] [thumbsup] [thumbsup]
Will pull strongly from 2000 rpm.
Don't need to drop to 1st gear everytime in slow corners.
No more clunk clunk when you drop below 4000 rpm.
I am able to get to 6th gear without having to go above 80 mph.
Only negative maybe that it might be slightly slow on power at the higher rev range.
I will ride more this weekend and have a better idea.
So far I highly recommend it.
When and if, you decide to replace your exhaust and the Termi kit is all gone, I would and highly recommend the Rexxer Tunning option, allows for the OEM and any other diagnostic tool to connect and read data and ask the tuner to flash with the DP map and let him know where would you like the map to be "beefed up"
glad to be of assistance
Thanks again for the great advice. I will probably do the exhaust in the summer. Right now I am busy getting a Zx6r ready for the track
[thumbsup]
So. Did about 200 miles this weekend. It does seem that the bike has lost a little power. Is that possible with disconnecting the exhaust valve?

feels like it . . you just don't have the back-presure that the flapper fave . . now, it would be a GREAT time to flash ECU with DP796 map and install whichever exhaust you like . . . jusst ask tuner to install EURO map . . . HUGE difference
Another project. Will get working on it. Thanks again
Just running this up the flagpole as it might work well without the expense of cans, etc., etc... Was discussed on a Triumph forum where it works as advertised. Stupid simple too on a Bonneville where everything is right in your face. I'd try it first on the 796 but am too lazy to go digging under bodywork..., but might feel differently in the spring. ;D Apparently only relatively recently has this outfit supported Triumph and Ducati, but a long-time BMW tweak with mostly BMW reviews. There was one D-Scrambler though...
Anyway, this rig skins a cat a different way vs Fat Duc which won't work with Siemens. Plugs into the air temperature sensor circuit and tricks the ECU into believing that it's 20 F colder, resulting according to them, in a 6% richer AFR across the board, (has it's own remote temp sensor).
See what you think. http://www.boosterplug.com/shop/frontpage.html (http://www.boosterplug.com/shop/frontpage.html)
Certainly a cheap if somewhat basic option. An adjustment more than a tune, but could be useful.
I know some have said that the Exhaust valve Emulator does nothing, but after having it on for a few weeks I am sure the bike is much smoother in the lower rev range and much easier to ride in traffic.
I might try this other option in the summer,
I was planning on geting my ecu flashed this spring. Should this be done instead or will the best option be to do both? 2009 1100.

Maybe PM cyberswine and ask him about his experience. http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=72233.msg1332793#msg1332793 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=72233.msg1332793#msg1332793)
