Title: Monster 1100 stalls after 4-5 minutes
Post by: swampdonkey on November 29, 2015, 03:22:35 AM
Hi Guys.

I have Monster 1100 2009 model. Approx. 33000 kilometres on the clock. Bike has developed a problem where it looses power (stalls) after approximately 4-5 minutes.  Bike will not start again after that.  will turn over but not start. No rev registers on tacho when trying to restart. Jump forward to next day and bike will start and run for 4-5 minutes then stall again. I haven't modified anything to do with engine.  Has termo pipes on it. I have checked battery and battery is fine. I am not one to take the bike apart as I have limited tech capabilities. Basically this is the last option before I take to Ducati service techs. Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Fuel tank breather vent?

Next time the bike stalls and fails to fire up..... open the fuel filler cap and retry.... It's just a thought.

Good luck (and please do let us know when you find out the cause of this issue).

No tach signal indicates a loss of electric power to the ignition system, most likely heat related.  Most likely, the culprit is something solid state, hopefully not the ECU.

Since the problem is predictable the best tactic, IMO, would be to take the bike to a dealer or independent who has the Dds tester or equivalent for diagnosis.  After that you might want to tackle the repair yourself.  With some luck, the problem could be as easy as a bad or maladjusted ignition pick up.

Had a similar issue when we opened the dealership a few years ago . . . sort of same issues, issue were the sparkplugs because the PO had installed the race Termi exhaust but no ECU . . . same issue on a 696, FMF slip ons, no ECU . . . IIRC, Termi exhausts for those bikes also came with a dedicated ECU so if you have the stock ECU ot may be trying to compensate the extra air leaving the engine by adding fuel . . .

Try what UNG said and also check the sparkplugs

Carlos, would you get a response on the tack at cranking speed like on an analogue tach?
