Here is the start of my journey with my "new"(to me) 05 Monster S4R. I bought her for $1000 after the last owner laid her down and did some serious damage!
-Bent handlebars
-Busted throttle
-Busted Headlight
-Busted Taillight
-Ruined Radiator
-Dented in gas tank
-Busted clutch hub(3 broken prongs)
-Ruined clutch cover
After all of that she still turns over, so I guess I should be grateful for that haha. Anyway heres to a new adventure and seeing just how beautiful I can make her become.

Well I finally started stripping her down. Hopefully soon I'll be building her back up with new parts! I ordered a set of stock handlebars in black($34.29), but I'm also thinking of buying some Apex clip-ons from murderedout($60+shipping), this way I'll be able to fit both and see which look I like better and also which feels better once installed. I've also ordered;
-New Radiator(used but like new) $276 after shipping
-New headlight with integrated turn signals $21.59
-New taillight with integrated turn signals $28.99
-New Headlight mounting brackets, getting rid of the stock U-bar and lowering the gauge cluster $11.99

Not too bad I'd say.

Next step is stripping the tank off and trying to get that massive dent out, and then repainting her. I'm thinking a black tank with red decals. Thoughts?

Looks like it took a pretty good hit. How'd the frame make out?

Surprisingly I cannot find any damage on the frame, looks like when he laid it town the handlebars and clutch took the brunt of the impact.

I have an 2005 S4R as well.  You got a great deal.  Are you going to fix or replace the tank?

$1000 is a steal. You would have a tough time finding a motor for that.

The way I would look at it is basically you got a frame, forks, wheels, brakes and a bunch of other stuff free

Thanks guys, I'm pretty excited about it. I used to be a mechanic for Audi and I know bikes are a little different but it's nice to get my hands dirty again and be constructive. I am going to try and fix the tank, but I'm not leaving the option of getting a new tank off of the table if I can find one for the right price.

Check your engine case for cracks around the mounting bolts.  Good score though!

Received some parts in the mail today;
-Carbon Fiber clutch cover
-Headlight bracket
-Taillight
-Radiator

Installed the taillight and tested to make sure all functions work, they do, including the integrated turn signals. Also installed new radiator, have to wait to install the clutch cover until I get all the clutch components, and waiting on new headlight to see how the brackets look. I think I found a new way of lowering the gauges and the headlight with having the bracket, will update when headlight comes in and I can see how it works. Can't wait to get the rest of my parts in and get this baby out on the road.

In other words, I'm thinking I'm going to have to replace the gas tank, no matter what I try I can't get the dents out of the gas tank, and I found one for 125 bucks plus shipping which is about the cost of having someone fix the tank for me, so I put my bid in and hopefully I get it.

I checked the bike all over and haven't found any damage on the frame or on the engine, so I think I'm in the clear on any other repairs I will need, only time will tell though as I need to get her out on the road to see for sure.

Well I was out bid for the gas tank, looks like it's back to trying to fix the tank I got with the bike.....Wish me luck haha.

Removed the old clutch, and replaced with new parts, I think it looks really good! Can't wait to see how the clutch feels.

Well, I finally got the dent out, painted the tank, put everything back together, and now...she won't start! I am so frustrated I can't figure this out. It started the day I brought her home, even with everything that was busted, but now nothing. It tried starting for a while but never turned over. I'm wondering if the battery is dead from it sitting and me testing the new headlight and taillights.....

Borrowing a charging unit from a buddy, will try again in the morning and see if she starts up, I'm hoping that's all there is, I really don't want to have to break her down again and hunt down the problem. Will be posting pictures here soon of the journey she has gone through so far.

well here is the tank progression. Started off trying to pull the dents out, that didn't work. Next I started dinging them out from the inside. Needless to say that nothing got the dents out perfectly because as you can see they were pretty extensive. Once I got them out as much as possible, I used a sealer that is oil and fuel resistant to fill  holes that formed from the warping of the metal, and then I used filler to fill in the spots that didn't come out all the way, after priming and sanding and priming and sanding I finally got the tank painted and for a at home job with a  rattle can I think it turned out pretty well.

Along with the battery you might check to make sure you didn't reverse the fuel lines.

The tank should be marked. The feed (mandata) goes to the injectors. The return comes from the pressure regulator.

Also, you can hear the pump cycle when you turn on the key...right?

I switched the lines just to double check and the bike didn't like it, didn't even try to start, switched then back and it started to go but wouldn't turn over. My next thing is going to be taking out the spark plugs and seeing if they were fouled out, don't know when the last time the previous owner had them changed.

I'm at my wits end. I've checked the fuel lines, changed the spark plugs, charged the battery and still it won't start! What do I do now?

Video would be very helpful for us on the far end of the series of tubes.

The next thing in my book is the fuel filter and the lines inside the tank.

Took the lines out, cleaned out the tank, and checked the filter, there was some debris in there, so maybe that was the issue. Also double checked that the fuel pump was working and it is. Here are some pictures of the fuel lines reconnected, does this look right?

Still wouldn't start this morning, so I put some starting fluid straight into the cylinders and it started up, so It's definitely a fuel issue. Any suggestions on what to check?

Did you replace the filter, or just inspect?  "Some debris" indicates it is clogged to me. NAPA part number 3032 should do the trick.

Replaced the fuel filter, still doing the same thing, next up is checking the fuel injectors

Before you do that...

remove the fuel line with the white plastic band in your photo. If more than a small amount of fuel runs out, you have them backwards.

That did it, thank you very much, she's purring like a kitten now, took her for a test run and good god she's fast!

Not at all, I did switch them before and it didn't even try to turn over at that point, so I assumed the way I had them was correct, could have been a combination of a cliff on the filter and a backwards fuel line, but it is running now and I appreciate your wise words :)

So I took her out for the first ride of my ownership and she rode like a dream, however I noticed the speedometer is not working, all other parts of the gauge is working except for the speedo. I checked to see if the mileage was recording and it is not, and the needle does move when the bike is turned on, so I'm thinking that the wiring is not working somewhere, any advice or locations I should check? Thank you in advanced.

Speedo sensor is mounted to rear caliper bracket, wiring is routed along with the rear brake hose.

IIRC, it connects to the harness just a bit forward of the right rear motor mount.

You've got a wave rotor on the rear, it may not have the pins for the sensor to trigger on.

So after talking to the previous owner he said the speedo stopped working after he installed the power commander  [bang]
Anyone heard of this happening before and know of a way to fix it, other than disconnecting the power commander?

You might want to start a new thread about this as a build thread won't gain the attention of the power commander geeks. ;D

Fyi, if the bike happen to fall and land on the clutch basket, it will sheer the springs right off and leave you stranded. Just keep that in mind.

That's always a risk with open clutch covers, the only way I see of preventing that is by having a closed clutch cover. I guess it just comes down to whether or not the risk is worth it to have the clutch vented and having an awesome looking clutch cover.

If you fall on the left side and shear your left hand off...yer make the beast with two backsed too.

The pc shouldnt affect speedo. Check the rotor sensor spacing sensor connnecor then check with another sensor if all that fails.

I didn't think it would, but that's when the previous owner said it stopped working. I'll try and check that sensor, is it possible to get to it without taking off the rear wheel?

Should be able to see it on the caliper hangar. Small black sensor one bolt i believe. Follow the cable to the connector.

Now I just need to find a new speedometer/tachometer gauge, the stock one is just way too bulky for the rest of my bike.

Took the sensor out and cleaned it, still not speed or mileage when I'm riding.

Have a friend with same bike swap and see
