Title: Difference between 1999 m900 and a 2008 S4RS?
Post by: showerfan on December 29, 2015, 09:40:26 AM
I've got a 1999 m900 that's always been a little cramped for me, no matter how much I tried to raise the tail and drop the pegs, but I've heard the S4RS has a different geometry -- any experts here care to advise me?

I'm 6'3" and have long legs, but not ridiculously so. I ride a Panigale R, as well as some other bigger bikes like a Multi and a Diavel. But I've always lusted after the S4RS.

Now I've found one that's supposedly in pristine condition -- and completely stock -- but it has 12,000 miles on it. That's not bad, right? My m900 has 22,000 -- runs great but is too cramped.

Pls reassure me! I won't regret it, right? Or will I?

(PS, this will be an Internet transaction. I cannot go and see or test ride the bike. But I'm not so much worried about getting ripped off as I am concerned that I'll like the bike.

Thanks! Matt

Anyway to sit on one locally first?

no, not really. he is in ohio, i am in new york.

the http://cycle-ergo.com/ (http://cycle-ergo.com/) page seems to indicate a much bigger knee angle on the s4rs than the older m400/m600, but doesn't list an m900...

They list the 800 which has a higher seat than the 400/600, probably like what's on a 900.

On paper you'll be ~ as cramped on an S4RS as on a 900, but the forward lean angle is different between the two. Then again, the Panigale is even more cramped, but you say you're ok on it.... which doesn't make sense.

So, sitting on an S2R/S4R/S4RS will tell you what you need to know.

I'm your height and I'm ok on my S2R because of rear sets and a higher seat. Modifying your bikes, again, over the internet may or may not work well.

the 800 wasn't made until 2003 and i believe the geometry on is different from pre 01 bikes. i have heard that later monsters were built on the ST2 frame -- starting with the monster s4 and then for all monsters from 2002 on -- until they ruined everything in 2009.  :'(

True, but the geometry wasn't changed much.

I would say any difference is negligible, but like stopintime said, if your comfortable on the pannygolly you should be fine.

I looked at a couple of the Monsters on there, and there were large differences between geometrically identical models.
So I wouldn't consider it particularly reliable for Monsters.

As far as ergonomics are concerned, there's no difference between the S2R1000 and S4Rs.
Seat, tank, bars, footpeg assemblies, frame, all same-same.

Dammit Kopfjäger, your profile pictures sometimes freak me out  [shot]

I think there is a real difference between an old m900 and an s4rs, and therefore I am going to buy the s4rs.  So I'll need to buy the S4RS and hide it from my wife [bang] I have a problem.

So....You really didn't need our help after all. You were just trying to convince yourself.  :D

12,000 miles is nothing, right? it's going to take me forever to find another tricolore... RIGHT???

I'm sure there's a few out there with less mileage if you want to hold off.

I am 6'3" and have no issues concerning knee angle on my s4rs and it is certainly not worse than on a panigale (at least for me). 12000 miles should be ok if it was maintenanced. It is a great bike.

There is a very low mileage tricolor for sale at motoprimo in Burnsville Mn.  I think the guys is looking to get 13K for it.  It looks unridden.
