After owning my 1999 Ducati Monster Dark (originally a 600) from new it was about time to give it a full refresh.
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/DSC_0033Copy2_zpsa50e8294.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/DSC_0033Copy2_zpsa50e8294.jpg.html)
It started life as a 600cc and over a period of time ended up a 900cc with lots of non-standard bits.

It has been ridden all year round and has been borrowed by a few amateur photographers ....

I was part way through stripping it down, when I bought a ratty Ducati ST2 for £450. So I decided to put the ST2 engine in the Monster.
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1647_zpsc5cf335c.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1647_zpsc5cf335c.jpg.html)
ST2 Engine out of its frame:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1673_zps9acaa557.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1673_zps9acaa557.jpg.html)
ST2 Engine stripped down:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1697_zps9fb65f6c.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1697_zps9fb65f6c.jpg.html)
Lightened flywheel, it went from 5kg to 1.3kg:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/20141215_121818_zps88130f12.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/20141215_121818_zps88130f12.jpg.html)
Monster in bits:

Yorkie
I kept working on reducing the weight of the ST2 Engine. So I had the primary gears trimmed a little:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_0068_zpsb4f5363c.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_0068_zpsb4f5363c.jpg.html)
The engine mount had been damaged so a repair needed to be done:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_0069_zpse44dea1c.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_0069_zpse44dea1c.jpg.html)
All welded up:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/image_zpsbacb9bc8.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/image_zpsbacb9bc8.jpg.html)
The ST2 engine was soda blasted and the welding smoothed over, so you can hardly see the repair:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_0810_zpslgfxjzhu.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_0810_zpslgfxjzhu.jpg.html)
The crank was balanced and trimmed to suit (sorry about the crap picture):
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/image_zps36a33666.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/image_zps36a33666.jpg.html)
The engine was then etch primed and lacquered, so a nice battleship grey result:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1076_zps6gksgtyp.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1076_zps6gksgtyp.jpg.html)
Yorkie
The engine was then mocked up in the Monster frame for a test fit:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1081_zpslwtg1g1w.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1081_zpslwtg1g1w.jpg.html)
Hoses and loom laid up:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1084_zpsdybp8xxj.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1084_zpsdybp8xxj.jpg.html)
To mount the radiator I had to cut the mounts off the ST2 frame and weld them on to the Monster frame:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/image_zps2lrtupl2.jpeg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/image_zps2lrtupl2.jpeg.html)
Radiator fits just nice:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/image_zpsmbg3uzrm.jpeg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/image_zpsmbg3uzrm.jpeg.html)
The injectors highlighted a problem when it came to fitting the air-filters and intakes, there wasn't enough clearance so a little bit of trimming would need to be done to the frame:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/image_zps5tcou4ye.jpeg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/image_zps5tcou4ye.jpeg.html)
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/image_zpsvuddhrel.jpeg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/image_zpsvuddhrel.jpeg.html)
Yorkie
To give the custom alloy intakes enough room to fit, nearly all of the central beam needed to be removed:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1187_zpsf425zhvj.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1187_zpsf425zhvj.jpg.html)
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1188_zpsqbsoloqm.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1188_zpsqbsoloqm.jpg.html)
Because the removal of the central beam would potentially weakened the structure so I decided to weld in a little bit of over engineering:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1197_zpszrqnremo.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1197_zpszrqnremo.jpg.html)
Tacked into place:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1199_zpsi3nv2fph.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1199_zpsi3nv2fph.jpg.html)
It gave a nice fit in the end:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1204_zpsthlbu1xw.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1204_zpsthlbu1xw.jpg.html)
Yorkie
The engine and custom spaghetti stainless steel exhaust mocked up:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1250_zpslxievo3x.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1250_zpslxievo3x.jpg.html)
I had to trim the battery box to allow the air-filter fitment:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1362_zps4wfawez6.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1362_zps4wfawez6.jpg.html)

Other trick parts were the alloy adjustable cam wheels ready for fitting to the finished engine:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/image_zps21qrvvr2.jpeg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/image_zps21qrvvr2.jpeg.html)
Yorkie
I cut a little bit of weight off the clutch case, I had it roughly milled to start with:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1368_zpsdohrmhkf.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1368_zpsdohrmhkf.jpg.html)
I then went a bit further with a hand saw and some files:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1385_zpsgylxekum.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1385_zpsgylxekum.jpg.html)
It looks quite good with an alloy clutch basket:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1390_zpsoqbrafim.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1390_zpsoqbrafim.jpg.html)

While I waited for a powder coater and some little bits of welding to be done I took a plunge and trimmed the long standard front mud guard a bit:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1395_zpszapalxt1.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1395_zpszapalxt1.jpg.html)
This is how the Monster is at the moment:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1391_zpsevwldis9.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_1391_zpsevwldis9.jpg.html)
Hopefully the powder coaters will take the bits in at the end of next week.
Yorkie
Wow. In for a penny, in for a pound! You don't muck around!
Will be watching your progress with great interest. Cheers.
This project is going slowly because I am doing two side by side. I will post the other one up today as well.
Yorkie
G'day Yorkie, what's the other job?
Koko64,
I have just posted it up.
Yorkie
nice job, looks awesome
So let me get this straight. You have a pretty bad ass bike and are tearing it down to build a pretty bad ass bike?

Do you have a before-after weight for the motor? I'm curious how many kilos you dropped - I'd guess ten or so?

I am hoping that it will be no more than the standard Monster 600 it started out as, even with the bigger water cooled engine.
I keep trying to trim a little off here and there.
Yorkie
Really slow going, whilst waiting for the powder coating and painting to be completed. So I decided to start gathering up some blingy bits and bobs.
Picked up some bargain silicone hoses from AS3 Performance:
http://www.as3performance.co.uk/ducati-st2-1997-2003-high-performance-silicone-radiator-hoses-red/ (http://www.as3performance.co.uk/ducati-st2-1997-2003-high-performance-silicone-radiator-hoses-red/)
All I need to find out now is what size alloy finishers I need:

More stuff to follow as it arrives.

I know it has been a while but here are the body panels:

The powder coating is home, and looks bloody good.

Yorkie
How's it going?
Slowly to be honest. Work gets in the way. I am hoping to have it together for the summer.
Yorkie
Love to see you do a hi comp, short manifold, split FCR motor with ported heads one day. Monster needs some frame struts moved to do it which I wasnt prepared to do. With hotter cams, bigger valves, porting and short manifolds on a 944 motor some have got 100 aircooled horsepower.
Pretty cool.
I reckon you're the man to do it. ;D
I have a 900 engine to play with that has Hi-Comp pistons already (it is in the other project) and I will be refreshing the engine once that this one is almost complete.
I will be trimming some weight off the internals and clutch casing to start with. I will see what else I can get hold of for that one, at the right price!!
Yorkie
How's it going Yorkie? [popcorn]
Do you know what brand and exact color red was used in the powder coating?

Sorry I don't, I just asked for red and this is what he did.

I know it is almost 3 months since the last post but here goes a small update.
Collected the valve, cam and clutch cases from the painters, a really nice gold:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_2517_zps8zwcgrnh.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_2517_zps8zwcgrnh.jpg.html)
Home made Corse clutch case (this will be my spare):
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_2518_zpsbwoarhos.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_2518_zpsbwoarhos.jpg.html)
My home made extreme clutch case:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_2519_zpscqbgr2jf.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_2519_zpscqbgr2jf.jpg.html)
Mocked up the clutch case, I think it looks really good against the primer grey:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_2516_zpsnr50yucf.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_2516_zpsnr50yucf.jpg.html)
So this is how far I got today - almost a complete bottom end back together and sealed. Roll on next weekend and hopefully it will be complete.
Yorkie
Thanks for the update.
Cheers.
This was how far I got with the bottom end:

Not a bad effort .....
Yesterday I managed to get the heads together and shimmed:
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_2537_zpsvg8bwpv6.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_2537_zpsvg8bwpv6.jpg.html)
I do like the gold on battleship grey. I like the custom alloy cam wheels better ......
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_2538_zpshlesz1dk.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_2538_zpshlesz1dk.jpg.html)
All was going superbly until the barrels were going on and the oil scraper ring on the horizontal piston snapped ...... ffs!
So unless I find a spare one or a cheap set it will cost a small fortune .....
Cheers,
Yorkie

If i cannot find a replacement ring set for cheap, this is my only option. With import tax and postage it will still be over £250 for the piston kit.
Yorkie
Bugger it and go for JE hi comp 944 94mm pistons.
Nice! Keep it up
I cannot get an email reply from JE Pistons to see if the 944 Pistons will drop into an ST2 without any dramas.
Has anyone done this to an ST2 engine?
Cheers,
Yorkie
I can't say for sure, but I know of more dramas with 92mm/904 barrels that have been bored to 94mm/944 not quite matching the JE 944 pistons. You have every reason to be concerned without the barrels being matched to pistons. Try contacting Fast by Ferracci. They used to sell hi comp pistons for many desmodue models and also sold full 944 kits. They may have info for you that shows the way. What about contacting Sigma Ducati?
Cheers for some more ideas on people to contact. I will be trying Ducati John in Yorkshire as well, he has played around with custom Ducati's.
Yorkie
Things have started to look up. I just had a set of secondhand pistons delivered and the best part is they were free. One has a full set of intact rings and the other is bare.
People are bloody superb sometimes. I have also been offered a set of Ducati Performance pistons for £110 delivered, what a gift.
Onwards with the project.

The Hi-Comp pictures came through and they look just fine. With a clean, polish and maybe a trim if they weigh too much.

I do like the difference to the standard ones. They seem a little heavier than standard so they may have to be trimmed for the balanced crank.

Back on the project on Saturday and the new rubber arrived this afternoon:

190/55 rear and a 120/70 front both for £134. At that price they had to be worth a shot.
Yorkie
Would love to know how the 190 fits
I've done a few 190/50/17's onto 5.5" wheels at customers requests, but the 190/55 is too wide for a 5.5" wheel IMO.
I have used 190 Metzeler RaceTecs K1's & K2's before and loved them, slowed the turning down just a bit for me. First time I have used MAXXIS though.

Well I didn't manage the tyres today but I did do this .....

I agree. The profile will be wrong. Closer to correct on 5.75 but ideal on 6" wheel. Spooning it onto a 5.5" wheel will result in a different round shape than preferred. 5.5" : 180.
But it will look mighty fat.

I have run this profile for a while now and it works for me. Oh and it does look fat!

Only did a little bit this weekend.
Trimmed the custom alloy intake to fit around the modified frame:

This one did not need trimming:

Interesting set up. Nice looking stacks. I like the well rolled lip on the bellmouth.
A decent day today.

Fancy iron discs and little touches. [thumbsup]
I don't understand the reason for the springs on the header. That doesn't appear to be a slip fit piece...?

They are most definitely needed.

That may be the case, but I can't see why they would be from that picture. Can you explain or show how the head pipes are held in like that?
Right here goes:
The header has a loose cap that slots on the end giving a tight fit in the exhaust port. The exhaust clamp does not make contact with the cap so the springs keep it all in place.
Not the biggest of pictures but you can see the ends of the headers are smooth unlike the standard ones:

Hope this helps.

Ahhhh, so the clamp doesn't make contact with the header at all? I see now. Interesting...
Looking good, hope to see it at breakfast soon ðŸ'

Did a little more today, although the fuel tank needs to be redone as the decals are not right yet.

In a couple of weeks the loom will be put into position.
Yorkie
How's it going?
Next weekend more will be done. The loom will be laid up and the fluids will be filled up.
I was at Donington Park with Thundersport GB helping run the start-finish for the series.
Yorkie
Man, I really love the black/red contrast. Really at home on these Monsters.
The loom has been started, and the back end of the electrics completed (ish).
ECU in place and bolted down:

Very nice, im guessing the rear 190/55 sussed out
Yeah, easy fit. I think it looks great filling the rim and swingarm.
Yorkie
excellent, will be using the same size then.
Thanks
Be careful as some profiles differ a little.
Yorkie
yes, thanks will check actual sizes, looking at the michelin pilot power 3, or continental's
Looking good Yorkie ... Will be following your build with interest [popcorn]
