Title: *UPDATE*Test rode a panigale yesterday and now I can't stop thinking about it
Post by: danaid on January 17, 2016, 02:52:54 PM
My monsters suspension is tuned, and the bike is totally set up for me and it is a joy to ride, BUT during my short test ride I instantly felt the handling improvement and raw, crap my pants power when I opened the throttle for a few short blasts!   :o

I went to my second track day last summer and I'm hooked. I was contemplating transforming my monster to more of a handler, but I have room in my budget and a space in my garage for a second bike!   :P. I can't stop thinking about that panigale!

I've only sat on one and I'd love to ride one, but haven't actively pursued it since A) I'd probably die, B) my license would probably be forfeit indefinitely, and C) I would need to buy one immediately thereafter, assuming A and B didn't transpire.

From the reviews I've seen, the 959 is not too shabby either. Not sure if my old ass could handle a sport bike as my daily commuter.

The bike was a 1299S. The entire time im thinking , " I love this bike and have to have one!" and " I will probably kill myself!"

This might be my best option, the 959's will arrive next month and I will demo one of those also!

The track day/ canyon riding bug has hit me late in life. My wife gave me the green light to do what ever makes me happy( I'm using my own money not hers) I have to admit this is probably the last attempt at fulfilling this urge for a sport bike as my beat up body and slowing down because I'm getting a little scared is beginning to kick in.

Go for it while you can. [thumbsup]
Track days and canyon riding also came to me in my 30s as did racing. I wish I had raced while younger, but at least I did it. I still do track days. It gives you a reason to keep in shape.

Forget the big panigales...  :o

A certain four time world super bike champion said to me as I helped unload the shops 899 demo from his van after a weekend track day at which he'd lapped within a second of the circuits record and I must add in sport mode that this little beauty is all that's needed... [bow_down]

Well as far as I'm concerned, enough said... [thumbsup]

They say you can live with a 40HP motorcycle, and you sure can.
But opening up with a 200HP bike is something that puts crack on the retard corner, as far as addiction goes  ;D

A big +1 to what Geoff said.

And if you want a track bike, there's lots of quick, good handling bikes that are *way* less expensive to buy, and *way* less expensive to crash.

I've been giving the Panigales a lot of thought for a long time. The 1299 was at the top of the list for the just sheer everything it has. I know the 959 would be even better for total usefulness. My old body can tolerate it but in the end I ended up with a 1290 SuperDuke R.  [evil] [evil] [evil]

Get the Panigale if you want the superbike ride!!  [thumbsup]  [Dolph]

I was hoping that you would have picked up DRKWNG's 990SD but you still did way good!  Of course now he may have to keep it a while longer.  [evil] [evil]

A friend of mine is looking at a 950SM. Or DRKWNG's 990SD. You been on them and the 1290SD. How about a comparo of the three?

I have not had an opportunity to ride the 1290.

To compare the SD to the Sm,the  As   is much more manic. The sm is a bit more composed.

Stupidity abounds with both of them, but the sd is much better at stupid.

One other thing that most nutjobs or psychopaths may not think of is the sd is all day comfortable where the sm is good for about 4 hours.

Hey guys, I have to wait till next month for my local dealer to get their shipment of 959's to have a demo ride!

Here in California, there are lots of good, slightly used bikes for sale this time of year!
 check this one out,http://www.cycletrader.com/listing/2012-Ducati-Superbike-1199-PANIGALE-S-116931891

Wanting a smaller bike like a 899 or 959 but there have been some good deals lately,  I can't stop searching the for sale ads!   :(

There's lots of those starting to pop up.  One guy I know just grabbed a 1199S with only 3,000 miles on it and he's over the moon.  I guess if you are splitting hairs the 1299 and 959 are better but you couldn't convince this guy now.

So how do you like the 1290?

I'm assuming you have time one the 990. Is there any chance it is just as stuupid or did they dumb it down with the electronics?

This whole thread hijack should be shifted over to the Power of Orange thread.   ;D

The stock set up on the 1290 is fairly tame and a kitted up 990SD is more entertaining to ride, if hooliganism is your cup of tea.  Now a kitted up 1290 should be a whole different story and I'll get back later with that on P/O.   [Dolph]

So after many test rides, I was even more confused in selecting a bike.  I knew that I did not want to commit to a new bike since I might find out that sport bIkes are a pain in the ass. So I found the bike that I had drooled over when I first saw one new sitting in the Ducati dealership!

I found this sweet babe for sale on Craigslist by the original owner with low miles. Minus the NCR open clutch cover, it is completely original and was kept in like new condition!   [evil]

So how does the 1198 compare to the 1299 (and I assume you tested the 959 too)?  I've been toying with the same idea.  New 1299 would be awesome but probably way too much bike for the tracks I go to so the 959 seemed like a great option. However, every once in a while I see a cherry 1098/1198 and can't help but get a little "practical". I'm still a sucker for the trellis frame and dry clutch.

Did you buy the 1198s? How much if you don't mind me asking?

I havent ridden either, but have been told that while the Pani has extra top end power it also lacks the low end grunt and mid range of the 1198. Is this the case. What were your thoughts?

I believe 1199 owners have said to just twist the throttle a little bit more to get the same effect, the 1299 I rode felt way more powerful and a totally different  feeling engine than my 1198. It felt smoother accelerating and pulled hard until I let off the throttle. My 1198 feels kind of like my monster 1100, kinda jerky, loud, until around 6000 rpm and the power comes on strong, reves fast till redline but not at all like the 1299 and still manageable. The quick shifter on the 1198/1299 bikes are an awesome device and is something that you cannot go without once you experience it. Except for the first year 1199 with the new bike flaws, they are great bikes.

I think the talk of the grunt of the 1198/1098, in my opinion, is from those who are new to big twins or use to Japanese four cylinder bikes. The 1299 and the 959 I rode felt smooth and refined too me.
