Title: Noisy MTS1100
Post by: koko64 on January 30, 2016, 06:13:57 PM
Customers MTS1100 with 5000 miles is quite noisy when warmed up, but otherwise the most quiet Ducati motor  with its wet clutch when cold. The noise was an arythmic chatter akin to gear lash with an arythmic clatter and bearing whine. I feared the worst.

Fortunately the sump plug, oil, plugs and exhaust were all clean as a whistle. Alternator cover bearing and mains appear in excellent shape. Bike runs beautifully.
After much discussion and testing and examination I was able to ascertain the noise was (as Speeddog put it), a whole orchestra of sounds.
1. Bearing/belt whine eliminated with new cambelt bearings adjusted to new, looser spec. Old specs probably compromised the bearings.
2. Gear lash noise partially removed by removing a faulty anti lash sprung gear designed to reduce noise! [laugh]
3. Some noise reduced with correct oil (15/50) instead of the million dollar 0-30 race oil that was in it [bang]
4. Rattly Cat Converter and Staintune slip ons tightened removed more noise
5. Finally. New clutch drum/gear bearing and tranny shaft sleeve/collar got rid of more noise. There was alot of rocking play on the basket even with the complete clutch torqued up to buggery. Tranny shaft was solid as a rock. I suspect the bearing and shaft sleeve/collar specs were out from the factory on this bike.

Thanks to Speeddog, Carlos Darkmonster and Howie for helpful feedback and advice, and to Nibor for tech support with sending pics.
Just some stuff to be aware of. Certainly a good learning experience and a blight on an otherwise immaculate bike.

Much quieter now.
Cheers.

OW-30 Oil?!

Something like that. I think they used million dollar fancy pants 100% full synth racing oil. It looked like the low visc Motul stuff you would use in a racing in line 4 from when I drained it out. Didnt help the noise in a street ridden big twin.

Cheez . . .

Min visc is 10W40 . . . Mineral Semi-synth Synth . . . but not 0W-30 . .  some Hondas use it Suk ia using either 10W40 15W50 or 10W60 .  .  .
Ducati since 696 is ONLY filling up with 15W50 at the factory . . .  Was told back in the dealership days to avoid 15W50 on older wet clutch before APTC

I'd use 0w-40 if it was even made.

With full synth oil the first number is pretty much irrelevant to protective qualities when hot.

0/40 would be a good winter oil from that angle. Even here.

Sifting out the different noises and what caused them was a process for sure. It was good to have mates to consult.

I believe that most full synth oils flow pretty much the same down to 0 F from the oil thread w/ George (RIP). I think it's just a tested number.

...and it's always good to have another brain on the case.

One more thing to report. Three out of six of the cush springs in the clutch ring gear are too short, about 5mm too short. What a pita.  Three spring's are doing all the work and three rattle around. Since the ring gear and cush drive are industrially riveted to the basket, it's an expensive fix. If it was a bolt on, I could have replaced them via unbolting the unit and visiting the local spring factory. This explains the remaining noise, some of which is the springs rattling about at idle. Take the idle up to 1500+ rpm and it's all quiet. No gear chatter or rattle. For shits and giggles I'm gonna get a price for the whole unit.

I'd be pricing a primary set without the cush.

I hope that option is available for the 1100.

Three words...

dry clutch conversion.

You can thank me later.

With a dry clutch, the noise will be unbelievable, especially after a few thousand miles.

It depends on if you consider the sound of a dry clutch "noise".

Got a quote for a clutch basket with cush drive gear. $532 AUD. Thats just the wet clutch basket assembly sans front primary gear, and sold as a seperate part. I guess buying a whole primary drive set to change a clutch basket is crazy.
