Title: 2001 ie cluster on a '96 M900
Post by: cmross13 on February 07, 2016, 04:39:00 PM
hello. im interested in replacing the "Roadracing" gauge cluster on my '96 M900 with the stock unit from a slightly newer model thats equipped with a tach(in this case, a 2001 M900ie cluster)

has/can this be done easily and painlessly?

any suggestions either way?

The efi cluster won't work well on your old carby 900.

Your RR cluster doesn't have a tach?  The few that I have seen had a DP brand tach in them...

it has a "Roadracing" white faced tach in it, which works sometimes. im guessing its a loose connection or a broken wire between the tach and coil. the problem isnt so much the tach itself, as im fairly certain a new wire from the tach to the coil will fix it fairly painlessly, its just the overall condition of the cluster itself and its layout.

can you kindly explain why? what if i were to swap the speedo and tach from my RR unit into it? i like the OEM design of the later clusters and would prefer to have the included tach...

Since the '01 still uses a mechanical speedo you can probably use it, but it will not be plug and play or easy.  You will need a wiring diagram for both bikes and modify the wiring.  I'm not sure if the tach will operate correctly either.

I'm pretty sure the EFI tacho is set up for one pulse for every 2 revs, and the carbie tacho is set for one pulse per rev.

This...it will show rpms x 2 because the carby fires every time the piston reaches tdc whether compression or exhaust.

i understand why the 2001 tach wouldnt work, but would the cluster itself work if i were to swap the tach from my RR cluster into it? in other words, can you tell me if the RR tach or Ducati Performance tach would fit in it? maybe a superbike tach from a carbed bike or a 900SS tach?

im trying to find an option other than "no, it wont work" ;)

A DP tach should be the same size and fit in the housing. Don't know id a RR will fit.

And the signal should be fine?

Only if it is for a carbed bike. An efi tach won't read correctly and isn't adjustable for signal.

Thank you. That is precisely what I wanted to know. I'm sorry that it took so many follow up questions lol

One last one though, can anybody tell me if the pin outs are the same amongst the bikes with the round connector such as mine?

ive found a cluster from an S4. the round plug looks the same as mine, and the speedo drive is cable and in the same location as mine. i plan to replace the tach with that from my Roadracing cluster, as i believe its the same size and has the same two bolts on the back. if that wont work, i'll just leave the tach unplugged until i can get my hands on a bike tach from a carbed bike. also, i will either swap over my old speedo, or change the speedo drive at the wheel, as i have already purchased a complete cable assembly from a 2001 M900ie.

i need to know if i plug my wiring harness(round plug) into this, will the dummy lights work?

any other advice/suggestions?

Try it...or find a wiring diagram for an S4 and one for an M900 and compare.
