Title: Air pressure inside tank
Post by: Mhanis on February 19, 2016, 03:47:50 PM
Guys,

The Italian Dream Machine acted weird this morning, then blew air at me this afternoon!

It gave me grief starting this morning. I ride to work most days, but not yesterday. So it sat for one day without running. When I started it this morning it fired right up for a few revolutions then quit. That is not that unusual on cold mornings, so I turned the key off and on and tried again. This time it wouldn't fire at all. I turned it off and on again a couple of times then hit the starter, after several revolutions (many more than normal) it fired up and ran fine.

Off to work I went.

On the way home my fuel light came on. I stopped near the house to fill up and when I took the gas cap off there was a LARGE exhale of air. I do not recall that ever having happened before. The only thing I have ever done to the fuel system is remove the charcoal canister 45,000 miles ago.

Are the two related?

Mark

You've got an issue with the tank vent.

How to fix it depends on which bike... year and model?

Check to see that you do not have a pinched off vent line or a blockage in the line.

Any chance you changed caps or had the tank up/off recently?

Holy crap guys, I cannot believe I forgot my bike info, sorry!

I changed the gas cap, but that was probably 5 years ago. It was in for service a couple of weeks ago (belt change and what not) and a new battery, so the tank must have obviously been moved/removed. But I am pretty sure I filled up since then without an issue, but this would have been the first tank since then to go from FULL to EMPTY.

What clubhouse said.

Pretty sure it's the hose coming out the right side of the cap assembly that originally went to the carbon canister.
That's the likely culprit.
