Title: Server needs a patch
Post by: ducpainter on February 22, 2016, 08:42:12 PM
A vulnerability has been found in Linux...I guess Microsoft isn't the only one.

Our host requires the server be rebooted to apply the fix. It will shut the forum down for a bit. I can either just let it happen, or do it manually.

I figure to do it manually this weekend on Saturday night unless the host does it sooner.

The forum will first go into maintenance mode and then most likely be unresponsive during the reboot.

Okay. Linux should be rebooted every now and again anyway.

Why? Runs fine.

There is the argument that if you make a change to any software component it should be rebooted to ascertain it will run again, and that may be why our host is requiring the reboot, but that wasn't the impression I got. It sounds like it needs to be rebooted to allow the patch to be applied.

Yea thats the way it sounds, rebooted for the patch.
Intersetingly most programs that are added to Linux can usually be run without a reboot.
Same thing on the Macintosh which is based on Unix.

Linux / Unix is a pretty stable system and will run for many months or longer without a reboot. I ran my laptop running Linux for a couple of years without a reboot. But it doesnt hurt to do it every few months anyway. Things seem to run a little faster and smoother with a fresh start.

The DMF server has been running for 624 days 18 hrs 48 minutes with out a reboot and seems to be fine. We did some optimization a while back to conserve memory, and configured nginx to help out Apache, but that's it.

We're not running windows here.

That wasn't bad. Server restarted with no apparent issues.

Let me know in the Tech Issues board  if you're having any problems.
