Title: More M695 shock upgrade questions, please
Post by: cencalal on March 07, 2016, 10:34:35 AM
If S4, ST3, ST4 and 749/999 shocks are similarly priced on Ebuy, would the modifications required to fit the 749/999 Showa get me any better performance than the S4 and ST4 Sachs models, which are direct fit?
If not, I'm going to use the ST shock, since it has a single rate spring.  The stock 695 spring is actually a bit stiff for me (135 lbs)  and the 749 shock spring is lighter, so that might be a reason to go that way. But maybe the ST spring would work ok since I would have some compression damping adjustment to fool with...?
Another reason to use the SBK shock might be that the vertical cylinder coil would last longer relocated from the stock position less than an inch from the exhaust header...?
I'd prefer not to have to cut off the coil mount to fit the SBK, as some have said is necessary...?

Thanks
Alan

While we're at it, they're giving away clean, low mileage 848 - 1098 - 1198 Showas, and even the Ohlins from those models are going for under $300. I believe those are 12" long, but with the reservoir out the back like that, would it hit the tire on the M695?  I'm not using the hugger...

Thanks again

Ohlins says those shocks are 294.5mm long, 60mm stroke, so 234.5mm compressed.
I think the problem is the reservoir hits the tire, but I've not tried it.

695 shock is 305mm, 66mm stroke, so 239mm compressed.

I see - the ebay listing was for a Streetfighter 848/1098 Showa shock, and has a length of 305mm/12".  My mistake - different than the SBK.
It seems I read that the Showas are better than the Sachs in some way, but can anyone confirm this?  Or the tire clearance issue?

Thanks

I have a 848 shock on my 620.  I used a 999 ride height rod to keep the reservoir from hitting the tire, it is close though

Caperix, is that an 848 Streetfighter shock or one from the SBK?  If my reading is correct, the Streetfighter shocks are the same 305mm length as the Monsters, while the SBK shocks are shorter.  I was wondering about the Streetfighter shock because I was misinformed that they were Showas, which is not the case.  In fact, it looks like most Ducatis have had Sachs shocks since about 2002.  I don't suppose the brand matters much with a basic damper like these, and I found a decent ST4 shock for $50, so will go with that.  People sure seem to prefer the Showa forks over the Marzocchi though...
