Title: 0005 rsw Help!
Post by: zrmcwilliams on March 12, 2016, 05:29:57 PM
I'm having an extremely frustrating experience with my (just purchased 3 months ago) pro-owned 2012 Ducati Monster 796 ABS (stock pipes).  Everything was running and working perfectly until about 3 weeks ago.  At that point, I would turn the key as normal, push the button and it would sound like it would turn over once and the bike would cut off and I would get an 0005.rsw error code.  All electronics would automatically come back on then I press the button again and it would do the same.  On the third try it would fire up as if it is brand new.  On some occasions, it wont fire up at all and I just have to take the car.  Now, a few weeks later after reading forums and doing research of my own I've replaced the battery, upgraded the power cables to the Motolectric cables and installed a brand new regulator/rectifier and still nothing.  I've had a mechanic friend test the starter and starter solenoid and they both checked out good so what additional part could it could be?  Now every time I press the ignition button it just turns off, shows the code and restarts. Now the lamb sensor is showing error as well.  What else could it be?

Were you riding the bike on those 3 weeks?

Do you get a Batt reading?

Did replacement battery is OEM?

Was bike parked outdoors?

Yes, I would ride it within the 3 weeks when it would start up.  It hasn't sat more than 2 days without me riding it but like I said, after several attempts I just give up and try again the next day (which it typically fires right up perfectly...... annoying!) When it starts it rides 100% perfectly also (not sure if that helps).  The bat reading when I turn the key is between 12.0 and 12.2 and when it turns on it stays within 13.8 and 14.4 (I check at every stop light).  The battery replacement is OEM.  Its parked on my back patio (screened in with bike cover).  I also live in south Florida so our weather is always nice and hasn't gotten below 60 since I've gotten it.  Thanks for your quick reply!

First, fully charge battery and load test.  Yes, I know the battery is new, but do it anyway.  Then check charging output.  You want to see 13.5-14.5 volts across the battery at 3K RPM.

Randomly replacing parts is an expensive way not to fix a bike.

Ok, do as howie said about charging battery, once you do that, you should SEE  13.5 no less at idle . . .  you should see 14.5 at 3K and then a roll back to 13.5 and as you ride you should see it going to 14.5 and then 13.5 back and forth . . .

Since FL doesn't allow lane splitting I'd recommend taking the long way to work/home where you can actually keep RPMs above 3K for purposes of charging the battery . . .  I-75; I-95; 595; 826; 836 and Turnpike are traffic heavy until about 0830h . . . If you ride inner city is even worse . .

If, and ONLY if after performing test outlined by howie, you still don't get the "spec" voltage, then take it to any of the SoFla dealers or experienced shops in Ducati for them to have a look.

Last "cold" spell was January but, humidty is always "high" . . .

Perform the outlined tests and report back . . .

Awesome, thank you guys for all the advice.  I'll load test the battery and post the results tomorrow or the next day.  I have a thought that may help... hopefully.....  When I bought the bike I would ride almost every night with a buddy of mine for 2-3 hours, he moved away about a week and a half ago and I haven't been on a ride other than 10 mins to and from work since.  Thats also right about the time all this started happening.  Also, when I bought it they said they changed the oil... which I should have known better... but I changed the oil 3 days ago and it still had the ducati filter and the oil was black as hell.  I've only put 1k miles on it since I purchased it and I wouldnt expect the oil to be that far gone.  Now that I've changed the oil, over the past 2 days its fired up perfectly (knock on wood).  Like I said, dont know if that adds a different dynamic or not..... but who knows at this point!

Could be your battery guess was correct, but the new battery was not fully charged before put into service or your regulator guess was correct or both.  without proper diagnosis first we will never know.

Hmm, when they replaced the battery they had it hooked up about 20 minutes before they had me swipe my card and hand me the keys.

IIRC, the Ducati procedure for battery charging and subsequent warranty is/was:

No less than 2 hours just with the acid and at least 4 hours on the trickle charger at NO higher than 2A charge

Fantastic, so it seems like that may just be a major contributor.  Is there anything I can do now or is the battery always going to be sub-par and give me problems?

I already have a Bikemaster intelligent charger/maintainer 6v or 12v.  It doesnt allow it to overcharge so I usually hook it up an hour or so before I leave and its usually fine, but not 100% of the time.  The annoying part is, 3 minutes after I hook it up it shows "full charge" already and the green light is on.  The more I read, the more I'm thinkin them not charging the battery before installing the new one may have doomed me.  Like I said, they charged the battery 20 minutes and said "youre good to go"!  bastards.
