Title: Fuel Tank Leak - 2006 S2R 1000
Post by: JoTra on March 27, 2016, 09:23:02 AM
About two weeks ago I realized that fuel was dripping to the garage floor (bike has been in winter storage since November). I am not sure if the rise in temperature increased the pressure in the tank which lead to the dripping. Just guessing. But I am sure in wasn't dripping at the beginning of the winter.

When checking yesterday I found that the leak is between the fuel pump based and the tank. There is no crank in the tank. The tank was coated about two years ago. The o-ring seal at the base doe not show any cracks.

I searched the forum but I still have a few questions:

(a) I want to replace the o-ring. The OEM part no. is 886.4.049.1A. However, I cannot find it on the internet. Also, per other posts there is supposed to be an "x-ring" seal that supersedes this o-ring. Does anyone have the part no. for this x-ring seal and a suggestion where to order it?

(b) I am concerned a new seal does not fix the leak (because the tank might be warped in that area; see other posts). - Does it make sense to apply Hylomar Universal Blue in the area? Any experience or recommendation?

(c) Since I have taken the fuel base out of the tank alreday: Do you recommend to replace other parts (fuel filter, ...) at the same time? The bike is almost 10 yrs old but has less that 10K miles on it.

Any help is appreciated. I want to do the right thing to avoid an future fuel leaks.

Updated parts get new part numbers.  The new part number is 886 41 881A, you should be able to get it at any decent Ducati dealer or http://ca-cycleworks.com/ca-cycleworks-products/gaskets-o-rings?p=2 (http://ca-cycleworks.com/ca-cycleworks-products/gaskets-o-rings?p=2)  who is a fantastic board sponsor.

If the new O ring doesn't work the sealer is an option, but...ummm...the possibility of fuel leaking on my hot engine and the possibility of chestnuts roasting on an open fire does not appeal to me short of an emergency repair.

Definitely replace the filter and do check the condition of the fuel hoses.  If you need hoses, they must meet SAE 30R10 spec.
