Title: Check your torque values and bolts... rear brake flying
Post by: ducej on May 06, 2016, 11:17:57 PM
Hi All,
Driving yesterday, braking for a pedestrian crossing.... I heard a 'clonk' and saw something flying away from the rear. What happened, rear calliper plate brake mounting was sheared of and the brake calliper itself found its freedom, shearing the brake line and (off course) the speedo cable on its way to freedom. The calliper took a small chunk of the rim and left a nice scratch on the rear swingarm.  [bang] [bang] [bang]

Most likely culprit was the missing front bolt of the brake calliper and the calliper was only holding by the rear bolt. Lessons learned, check your bolts and torque values regularly. I myself checked the bolts 2000 km ago, whilst changing the rear disc but that  >:( bolt managed to work itself loose. Luckily it happened only with low speed.

The rear rim looks alright, except for the scratches and small dent in the spoke. I was thinking of some cosmetic repair by rounding/filing the sharp edges and give it a quick spray of black paint. Question, anyone had the same thing happening once? Should the rear rim be OK? I think I can reattach the speedo cable with some crimps but this might not work...

I have my work cut out with a rear end rebuild.
Parts necessary:
Rear Caliper plate
Rear brake
Rear brake line
Fresh brake fluid
Maybe new speedo sensor

Did I forget something? Any insights and/or advice is welcome, thx!
